We made a private forum public and the posts disappeared. Upon further research I see:

Private Forum Creation Note
Topics created when a forum is public will be hidden if the forum is made private. Topics created when a forum is private will also be hidden if the forum is made public. This is a security feature.

IS there any way to make a private forum public so the posts are not hidden?

You would need to create a temporary forum, use the mass move tool to copy the posts out, make the original forum public, then move the posts back.

This would break any existing links to those topics and posts, however.
