I am running UBB version 540 on our website at:
http://www.ctisus.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro
I need to move the BB to a new server, but I don't have the first UBB version that I installed to install on the new server. I have the zip file for the upgrade to version 540 only. What should I do?

Read this:

http://www.infopop.com/ubb_support/support_ubb_transfer.html

Since you do not have the original full zip distribution, you will have to copy all of the UBB files over to the new site. If you download to your PC, be sure to force ascii download of all files except .jpg and .gif file down to the PC and back up to the new server. (You can save a little work -- you do not need to copy the contents of the HTML directories - they will be regenerated when you Update Threads on the new site).

Be sure to keep backup copies of everything.

If you know how to use the tar program you could compress the whole board into one file and move it that way. On Unix, 'man tar' will give you the documentation. It is a bit daunting at first, however. You might also have to move the directories around on the new site. You can also zip the whole board.

You may experience some issues trying to reinstall that version on a new server.

You MIGHT want to risk upgrading before the move. (Making a backup first would be wise, of course... <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> )

Thank you both for your replies.
Yes, I think that I will have to upgrade first before the move. Especially since I found out that our leased license had expired (We're now buying the fully licensed version). Is there a certain protocol that I should follow for installing a new (upgraded) UBB version on a new server, and then trying to move everything over to it? Any pointers that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Besides following the move instructions as pointed out above by Hal, there's not much.

Verify that, after the upgrade of the original board, ALL functions work. Check posting threads and replies, create a new forum, prune a post, check the search... just make sure that there are no problems before the move takes place.

I won't be upgrading the original board (since I couldn't find my original program to install). We *did* buy a new non-expiring license yesterday, so I will be installing a full version of Ubb 547d to the new server. Then I'll have to attempt to move the threads and members over. Our board is *very* small- only about 40 messages, each having only one reply (it is set up in a question/answer format). It would be great if there were only a few files that I needed to move from the old server. Any pointers?

The file formats have changed a bit between 5.40 and 5.47 - I'm going to have to insist that you upgrade the original board first and verify functionality, THEN perform the move. Trust me, you do NOT want to move the old files over, they're very likely NOT to work...

So I can use the full version 5.47 to upgrade the board? Sorry if that's a stupid question, but usually when I've upgraded software the upgrade version that they give you is not a full version, it's a patch.

If I can use the full version to upgrade the board then it shouldn't be a problem to do it before the move.

Yes, you can use the full version zip to perform an upgrade. Just make sure NOT to overwrite the variable files, and you'll be fine. Check out the Upgrade instructions for details.
