currently i have the board installed and running. there are no problems with posting of messages or anything like that whatsoever.
but..
when i attempt to send an email to all registered users, the mail does not get sent. i have checked to verify what we are using as an email server... its actually a modified sendmail binary to allow the using of qmail. i wont try to go into the explanation of that, but from the commandline, /usr/sbin/sendmail will react in the exact same way that sendmail does.
now.. when i configure the board to use /usr/sbin/sendmail as the location of sendmail, i get no errors at all. when i send the mail through the mail users option, all messages are normal. except for one thing. the message never gets sent.
now.. i have tested the sendmail command from the commandline and the mail does get sent when i log in as either root or as user. (so the person that wrote the binary did a good job) - but never when envoked by the cgi.
couple answers -
/usr/sbin/sendmail is a simlink to: /var/qmail/bin/sendmail
and there is infact a wrapper for the qmail binary located in: /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject
i have tried all three of the above locations to point to sendmail, but the same thing happens each time. the screen shows a successful send, but no mails are ever sent.
any clues?
oh yeah.. this is a *NIX installation. but i bet you already figured that out.
<addendum: now.. i am thinking of running a perl script that will not require the use of sendmail, but will react to the commands the same way, possibly using the smtp server through an authentication of some sort. IE: i tell UBB to send the mail using my account to send a message to my users - anyone have a clue as to how i would go about that one?>

Ok, first things first... Version and URL please. Who's your webhost? Have you spoken to them about any possible email problems?

hosting - me myself & guys in the back <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
mail problems - checked into, and looked at all things, permissions, ownerships, etc... and all is valid. even contacted the guy that wrote the qmail binary and had him look into it as well. but since the sendmail app will run from the commandline (using both root & user) we figured, that there was no problem with sendmail. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
note: - the forum is password protected... so if you want in, let me know.
There are surely hundreds of UBBs running using qmail under a sendmail wrapper, including mine...
Can you attempt to switch to SMTP?

are there any issues that i should know when running smtp off of a *nix box as compared to a win32 version of smtp? (i didnt think there was, but...) only reason i ask, is that in the setup for this board, it specifically says smtp for win32.
there wont be a problem to turn my smtp server to allow relaying, but i was just curious if there was anything else that i needed to worry about.
It doesn't matter, as long as it's just plain old vanilla SMTP. No authentication or anything else that a three year old mail library can't handle... *L*

good enough cc <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
i will keep ya posted as to how this works... thank you VERY much for all the assistance. hopefully, this smtp thing works, and you can place a lock on this thread. <g>
ok... i have checked and relaying is allowed. no problem as far as the relay feature goes. but.. (always has to be one of those huh?)
i attempt to send a message and this is what i get...
{snip} Could not connect to server. The server does not respond appropriately.. it may not be an SMTP server. Server Error: "" Server Error: "" Server Error: "" Server Error: "" Server Error: "" {/snip}
i get that error as many times as there are users... then at the bottom of that page, it says that the mail was sent correctly to all users, and lists their email addresses.
hmmmmmmmm
do you think that this cgi could have been corrupted in some way? i got it from my admin here at work, and he said that "we" purchased it some time ago.. (i dont know how long ago) i am just wondering if someone could have tinked with it or something.
Ya know, if you were on NT, I'd blame that on a corrupt socket problem in older perl builds.
You definately have a problem here, and I think I've done all I can to diagnose it... Time for Infopop to see what they can do. It's possible they've seen this before. I'm going to point you at the support ticket system - select the 'Malfunctions' item from the dropdown box and hit Go.
