Up for sale is a Gateway 2000 Handbook 486, model HB486SX-25, in excellent cosmetic condition and tested working.

This is a wonderfully compact piece of early-1990s portable computing history, and this example is especially nice because it is not just a display piece. The system powers on, boots successfully, and loads DOS and Windows 3.1.

The following functions have been tested:

• Powers on normally

• Boots into DOS and Windows 3.1

• Built-in LCD display works (see pics)

• Built-in pointing device / mouse works

• Status indicator lights work

• Processor: Intel 486SX running at 25 MHz

• Memory: 4MB built-in RAM

• RAM Expansion: Empty expansion slot available for additional memory

• Operating System: DOS and Windows 3.1 currently installed

• Pointing Device: Built-in mouse / pointing control

• Display: Built-in LCD

The original battery is included and will currently hold a charge for approximately one minute. Given the age of the battery, it should be considered exhausted for normal portable use.

However, the original battery shell may be useful to a vintage-computing hobbyist who wants to rebuild it using modern cells while retaining the original 2000 Handbook 486 HB486SX-25

This would make a great addition to a vintage computer collection, an early DOS/Windows portable setup, or a restoration/modding project. Finding one of these compact Gateway Handbooks in this condition, with the original power adapter and still fully bootable, is becoming increasingly unusual.
