Here is a system Dell built as a mainstream business PC in May 1996. This month I upgraded the RAM, replaced the CMOS battery and IDE hard drive. I also added PCI cards for USB and Fast Ethernet. I then installed WIndows 98SE with all necessary drivers. It is now ready to install your favorite applications, from floppy diskette, network, or CD.
This is a large vertical case that has not yellowed much. There are three free drive bays: two exposed 5.25" and one hidden 3.5" hard drive bay above the power supply.
The Intel 430FX chipset motherboard has seven expansion slots. One PCI and two ISA slots are free. The first PCI slot is filled with a Matrox Millennium Storm graphics card with 2MB of WRAM. Another PCI slot is filled with a card providing two USB 1.1 ports. A Belkin 10/100 ethernet card takes up the slot which could be used with either a PCI or ISA card. One of the ISA slots is filled with a Creative Labs CT2800 Sound Blaster 16 Value with a Yamaha OPL3 for FM synthesis and Creative's Vibra 16S chip. The motherboard's socket 5 has a 166MHz P54C Pentium processor installed. Dell added a COAST imodule with 512KB of L2 cache. There are four 72-pin SIMM sockets. Two sockets are filled with 16MB SIMMs and two have the original 8MB SIMMs installed, for 48MB of EDO RAM, upgradeable to a maximum of 128MB.
The motherboard includes connectors for two PS/2 ports, a parallel port and two serial ports.
