Vintage Sun Microsystems SPARCstation 2 workstation, sold as-is for parts, repair, or restoration. Please read the complete testing details below. The operating system does not boot successfully.
The workstation powers on and produces video output. The OpenBoot screen identifies it as a SPARCstation 2 and reports 64 MB of installed memory. During startup, the displayed 16 MB memory self-test passed. A keyboard was used successfully to enter OpenBoot commands.
The system displays “The IDPROM contents are invalid” during startup. Its Ethernet address and Host ID display as all Fs. It attempts to boot from the network by default, but the network boot fails with an internal loopback error and “Can’t open boot device.”
The OpenBoot “probe-scsi” command detects two installed Seagate hard drives:
• SCSI target 3: Seagate ST15150N
• SCSI target 6: Seagate ST32430N
We attempted to boot from each drive:
• Target 3: The system accesses the drive, then displays “The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.”
• Target 6: The SILO bootloader starts and displays “Uncompressing image…”, but startup stops with “IDPROM: Unknown format type!” and “Program terminated.” The system returns to the OpenBoot “ok” prompt.
These results show that both drives are detected and that the second drive contains a bootloader. Neither drive was confirmed to boot a working operating system. The drives have not been fully tested for health or data integrity. The cause of the IDPROM error has not been repaired or conclusively diagnosed.
The inside of the workstation is shown in the photos. It includes the two Seagate drives, installed memory, a floppy drive, and an additional MAGMA Parallel SP card. The floppy drive, expansion card, network connection, and other ports have not been individually tested. There is a “Juniper” label on the front of the case. Please review all photos for the cosmetic condition and installed components.
Included: SPARCstation 2 system unit with the components pictured inside it. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, and test cables are not included.
