That stats hack is a server killer - I'd advise removing it.
The symptoms you describe don't match up with the dead topic file - there should have been no impact whatsoever...
Please ask your hosting provider if they did experience an out of space condition around the time of the error. Remember, just because you're paying for that disk space doesn't actually mean that your provider actually makes it availalable. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
