Because both the US MM/DD/YY and UK DD/MM/YY do not sort properly on a computer.
Only the YY/MM/DD sorts properly. Windows XP attempts to do some guessing on that sorting for you, but if you really want sorting properly then you have to use YY/MM/DD as that will always sort correctly.
But I doubt that will really happen any time soon.
