I am not sure of the demo but you could add some islands to see the change in the display width.
There are some canned islands like you see here such as calendar.
Goto:
Control Panel » Portal Layout
the top 10 or so islands are canned.
for the first one. "search" select left column 1
for the second one."Who's Online" select right column 1
for the third one. "Newest Members" select left column 2

That should show you something.

Oh don't forget to click on the update layout button on the bottom of the screen.
