Well, I had neglected to set the 'nobody' password on the db. I wish the bboard software would give a more descriptive error message, such as: Error accessing database.

It does, you need to enable server logs in the ubb control panel.
In fact it is strongly advised by all of us to do so.
Other wise you get a generic message
The logs are accessible via the cp and the files are view able as text if you ftp to the folder.
