We have 31 forums. I guess that isn't a lot, but it can be. A lot of the forums are specific to certain members, but you can't really break them down into categories.
Think of it like having 31 models of cars (no we are not this kind of site, just using an example) and a user has 5 types of cars. He only wants to see these 5 forums.
With the favorites list you could do that, but how it is now you can't. Yes, you can put all 5 forums in your watch list, but then you get all the posts inter-tangled.
Going back to the car analogy, you might want to concentrate on one car at a time.
