Thanks for your help David. Actually, you were partially right about the pages not loading correctly. I use IE5.5 and after refreshing the pages a few times, the pages eventually loaded fully <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> So I re-uploaded the files you suggested just to be sure.
I will upgrade to 5.47e I think, soon after I get my current version of ubb running smoothly.
