I have downloaded the Freeware version of UBB and followed the installation direction for Windos NT. I'm running Windows 2k with IIS 5. I was able to get as far as loading the controll panel and even farther to General Settings. The problem according to the support board is that most likely my Absolute path to Members folder is not correct. I have checked more than at least 10 times to make sure the path is correct yet I still get the same error:

Sorry, but we couldn't find a record for the UserName you entered. Please try again.
If you are configuring your bulletin board for the first time, this is probably due to the fact that you did not set the proper variable for your CGI Directory absolute path.

Use your Back button to try again.

I also used the test programme and it told me that all my directories have the right permissions etc

Please can somebody help me.
The path to my cp file is:

www.gulfinsite.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/cp.html

Actually, the URL to your cp.html is:
http://www.gulfinsite.com/ubb/cp.html

Anyway, I have set your paths and URLs. Take a look in General Settings at the top six variables to see what I set. (Please, do not touch <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ).

You are now at step 12, use the user/pw there and continue the setup with special attention to steps 16 and 17 to set up a new admin and get rid of Admin5.

Happy New Year!! (et millenium).

Paths and URLs all set now. I messed up the cgi URL, but it is okay now. (And I didn't even party last night <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> )

Added:
I made myself an admin in case you get in trouble. As soon as you are satisfied your now new administrator status is working, delete me.

I took a look at your site. You are missing some files. When you upgrade from freeware to licensed, be sure you download the full version, not the upgrade version. The upgrade version is only for upgrading a licensed version.

Never Mind -- I just looked again and it seems to be working okay <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> .

Hal...

I got the whole thing working and was feeling rather proud - then disaster...

I was trying to change security settings and now I cannot get Amdin5 to work at all and the only account I can log in on is mine and I have Junior Membership.

I have tried uploading the Members files again (a few times) and now I seem to have further complicated the issue.

Thansk again if you can help with this one.

oh sorry, a little more info, what happened was that the free version seems to use admin5 and the standard one uses Admin5. The problem was that it keeps picking up the admin (older version) and this stopped me getting at some of the functions...

Thanks again - T

I made you an authorized administrator. I also authorized you to post as that was not on. You should be able to do all of the functions. Be sure to close all browser windows, then restart the browser before you go to the control panel. This will clear the session cookie and allow you to enter your new user/pw. It is case sensitive.

If you can get into User Permissions okay with your own new userid, delete Admin5. (Did you edit any files directly?)

Both versions use Admin5. I am not sure what may have corrupted the file unless you let your ftp program change case on the files or you tried to edit it.

Be sure you type your new user name exactly as you registered, i.e., all lower case with a space between the first and last names.

Reloading Member files will not work once the General Settings are submitted in the licensed version. It is more complicated, but you should be okay for now. If it happens again, look at this thread.

Hal, thank you very much for all your help - I am up and running now.

One little question though - if you get access to my system to set yourself up as an adminsitrator - does this mean that there is a security issue here?

Toby

No. I did that when you still had Admin5 as the default administrator and the board was essentially open to anyone. If you have set up a new administrative user, deleted Admin5 and deleted my account, you are as secure as UBB ever is. An additional consideration is to have two usernames for yourself. Use one privately for administration and another for general posting. You can identify yourself as boss in the signature. The small security gain is that of hiding the admin username. It might also be wise to register the permanent administrator at alater time so the member number is not easily guessed. Just be careful to always have a new adminstrator before you delete or change the status of the old one <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> .

UBB is a reasonably secure program for a public bulletin board. It is not bullet proof, but Infopop responds very quickly if security bugs are found. If you are on a shared server, you are always at some risk from other users depending upon the savvy of the host tech people.

Review the NT security page by Infopop. The basic instructions are a "one size fits all" approach. Security can be improved on many systems if you have enough control.

As far as i know, there is no problem with the installation instructions. Please start a support thread of your own to allow us to respond to your problems.

It appears you have removed/disbaled the Admin5 account. Could you renable it or post admin details for us to help you, and spercify the problems you are having in as much detail as possible.

Thanks

Just a thought <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
