I entered the name of a registered user as the new moderator of a forum and clicked the update button at the bottom of the moderator screen. However, when I return to check the list of moderators the old moderator name is the only one there. What am I doing wrong?

URL? Version?

Did the person's member status in their profile get updated to Moderator?

Is mods.file chmod 666 or 777?

It is extremely difficult to do any troubleshooting based solely on the information you supplied.

The mods.file does not contain chmod. Not 666, not 777.

What I was asking about mods.file is whether or not the web server user has write permissions.

The permissions settings, or chmod as they're commonly called, are not contained WITHIN the file.

Since this sounds like a permissions issue, moving to PIT.

By the way...

v5.40 has numerous bugs and potential security problems! You are strongly advised to upgrade.

I am editing out your URL and sending it to Charles for your own security, in case any of those bugs apply to you (many depend on your precise server setup) - I don't want someone following the link and attempting an exploit which may or may not work.

If your members area access has expired, contact Infopop and they MAY be able to give you a patch to get rid of the more serious bugs.
