I'm running 6.3.1, no hacks. URL is Disabilities Bulletin Board

I had the understanding that post count was always replicated throughout the posts, i.e., if my count was at 500, then it would show as 500 in every post I had ever made.

I just noticed today, though, that it isn't working that way.

Here's the details from a user in one of the posts:
Quote
Posts: 1002 | From: Richmond, VA, USA | Registered: Mar 2002 | IP: Logged |
and here's the same thing from another post in a different forum:
Quote
Posts: 999 | From: Richmond, VA, USA | Registered: Mar 2002 | IP: Logged |
Is there a "lag" on the post count due to caching? or maybe a bug?

The post count only updates when someone edits or posts in a thread, just like the rest of the topic.

That's not the behavior I'm seeing. I can look at posts for this same member (as above) that are months old with no edits or updates since, and it shows posts over 1000.

So is this a cache issue?

Also, I'm seeing discrepancies in the actual counts. I get one number if I count them manually (programatically, by reading all the posts and counting per user). The post count that shows in their posts is another number, and the number of entries that shows up in their [membernumber].cgi (in Membersuser_posts)is another number still.

I assume that post count does not take deleted posts into consideration, but it still seems there is something amiss here.

I don't see any explanation of what is counted and what isn't in the documentation, can someone explain exactly what the post count is telling me? And why I see a different count in the post, the "user_posts" records, and the actual posts themselves?

The count will remain the same in that topic until the cached copy is purged, at which point it will be updated. As cached copies can last a very long time indeed, this may cause the post count to become out of synch from time to time.

This is the designed behavior.
