I run my board in the ISO-8859-2 character set. When I write a post and then preview it the character coding gets mixed up. The post page and the preview page are in the sam charset (ISO-8859-2 of course), but some of the characters are jumbled up. When I manually change the post preview encoding to the Windows one then the characters return to normal, so somewhere along the line they are converted.

The preview window operates by executing a Javascript to read the values out of the form in the main window.

The JS is probably messing things up...

Can you post screenshots of the post and the preview window?

Hi Charles,

Can you please give me a quick tip on how to get those screenshots?

I'm not sure if this has any relevance, but another thing with is a great impediment when using the Control Panel is the fact that the CP itself doesn't use the same charset as the board. What this means is that when you go into the Wordlet feature for instance then you have to manually change the character encoding each and every time. The same applies to almost any text change you are making, such as forum descriptions. The encoding has to be manually toggled each time you choose one of these CP options.

Screencaps... are you using Windows 98 SE or later? (I.e. ME, 2k, XP)

We know of the control panel issue. When we complete Wordlets in the control panel (in some undefined release), we'll add in character set options there as well, which will relieve that problem.

Win2000, passed on XP even though I bought a new computer last week.

Good choice.

Okay, it's pretty easy.

1) Open the window or windows you want to grab screencaps of.

2) Hit the "PrtScn" button on your keyboard.

3) Open up Windows Paint.

4) Edit -> Paste

5) File -> Save As

6) Save it as a JPG file.

Repeat for each screencap you need to make. Upload the files (they might be pretty big) and post the URLs to them here.

The print screen button doesn't seem to do anything. I thought that it might be be easier to send you a login/password so you can take a quick glimpse, but then you probably don't have special characters set up on your system.

Let's see if they show up...: ąęóśłżźćń

If so then you could just cut&paste them and see how the preview changes the charset.

Hmm, wait a minute. Wouldn't switching everything (CP included) to unicode be the best solution to charset issues? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Unicode isn't a magic bullet.

The UBB requires Perl 5.004.... Perl versions prior to 5.6.0 do not support Unicode, and even then, only 5.6.1 supports it with a minimum of bugs.

We can't build in Unicode support into the UBB. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I'll test out those characters in just a moment...

Wow, that's odd... Very odd.

What character set is your board using?

ISO-8859-2

It seems that there might be a conversion to the Windows-1250 charset somewhere in the process, even though both pages (post a reply and preview) are showing up in IE as ISO-8859-2. What's interesting is if I manually change the encoding of the preview screen to the Windows one then the characters appear as normal again, so some sort of charset conversion seems to be taking place.

Do you have Netscape 6.2 or a recent Mozilla installed? I suspect that they won't have this issue...

Just IE 6.0 to be honest, haven't used Netscape in years. Is it something in the code which is making these strange encoding changes?

Charles, I'm not entirely certain but I think that this might be very helpful: the preview function works fine in the poll function! I just gave it a look and all characters are preserved as in the original. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The poll preview gets its data from the poll file itself rather than a form in the parent window... that's why it works as expected.

Thanks Charles. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Any idea if this issue will be resolved in the near future?

I'm not sure that it CAN be resolved... <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Have you tried switching your board to UTF-8? I'm not sure if it will help or not.
