Well, I installed the newest version (at ubb.fanasylum.com and my board has crashed a few times since this morning. My boardies love the option, but I can't live with it longer.

I'm running Win NT, 800 Mhz, 512 MBs RAM and my site gets about 40k hits a day.

I also noticed many instances of Perl.exe running. I'm using the latest version of ActivePerl.

More memory? Faster CPU? Etc? I don't have the UBB Accelerator because a lot of boardies get problems with I turn it on. Also, I can't get zlib working to save my life. Oh woe is me.

Turn polls off completely for a period - does the board stablize?

If so, try turning them on in one forum, but limit their use to moderators / admins / members only. That will reduce the number of users trying to create polls.
