I have been receiving reports from members about how the Quick Reply feature sometimes does not post the reply to the thread.
They report that after typing in their reply and clicking on the “Add Reply” button, the reply is not posted to the thread and the board does not return any kind of error message. They are simply taken right back to the topic where it appears just as it did originally.
From what my members are telling me this is a very intermittent problem where it works fine the vast majority of the time. I myslef have yet to experience this.
Not dumb at all to ask such a question. I asked the same one when they reported it. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I’ve had enough experience with “user error” to never assume anything.
At least one member did hit refresh that I know for sure to no avail. This guy is a programmer and also knows his way around a web page. I was suspicious of the reports until I got one from him. In all, four members have reported experiencing this behavior more than once.
I had a very minor hack installed that allows the PM notification to appear on the Active Topics. I did not see how this might cause the problem, but restored the board to the official release and cleared the cache just to be sure. I received another report after having done this.
***edit***
Just checked my e-mails again. I was wrong. I've not yet had any reports of this problem yet since removing the hack.
*******
I have a standing request on the board for anyone who might experience this behavior to report it to me. I’ve had none in the last couple days.
does the post show up later on? Sometimes at my board 2 people post at the same time, and only one post shows up till that page's cache gets cleared (through editing, etc) and then it shows.
The posts never did showed up. When the first report was made, the member sent me a PM with a link to the thread he was trying to post to. He decided not to continue trying so I could have a look. There was no posting by him in that thread when I looked at it. I went ahead and made a quick reply to that thread without a problem.
I would have my doubts about this if not that one of the members who has reported it knows his way around a computer.
I did not think that Charles's code change should be able to cause this problem, but just didn't want there to be any chance that anything I did to the board would be causing anything. This installation of the board has not been touched beyond that one change and it has been changed back by putting the backed up file back in place.
I’d be looking to myself for this problem, but the installation is a new upgrade to the 6.7 beta and I have not done anything else to it. In fact, I am holding off installing another hack until I can get to the bottom of this reported problem.
I did a search of this forum before posting and did not find any other reference to such a problem. One reason could be that IF there is in fact a minor bug, it’s intermittent nature would make its discovery difficult. Not all board users will bother to mention it.
Did the posts made show up for users other than the reporter? If so, then this is going to be a client-side caching issue, and may be related to the spider-friendly URLs...
There is a new twist that I have just been made aware of and I wanted to be sure to post it here right away.
The first member to report this problem has informed me that this might all be a case of user error.
Here's the deal...
He caught himself about to click, out of habit, on the original "Post Reply" button that is located just below the newer "Add Reply" button (see image below). The close proximity of the two buttons MAY just be the culprit for all instances of this reported behavior.
I have asked him if he remembers what screen he was presented with after having clicked on the button when he experienced the problem. I am waiting for his response.
If he was presented with the “Full Reply Form” rather than the topic view, we have our answer.
I will report back once my member gives me his answer. Sorry for the possibility that this may prove to be a red herring. However, at least this may serve as something to check for IF anyone else has a member report this same kind of thing. More to follow.
Shoot, I'm not absolutely sure, but I don't think that did show up. It wus weird. But the same "weird" both times it happened. Just BANG, back to the thread, no intervening activity. And that new thread view WAS fresh. Because the 2nd time it happened somebody else was posting at the same time. His new post showed even though mine didn't.
So far, no problems this week. If nobody else reports it, we may be chasing a ghost.
I am continuing to remind all users to please report if they experience this behavior. So far nothing but lots of posts from members saying that all is well with QR.
