The board would load a lot quicker and wouldn't 'jump' when loading if all img tags had height and width set.

True, I read the browser has to calculate the sizes which slows it down. It would be great if they could be set in w3ttheme.pm because of the different button sets.

I'd be a huge edit job but I think I'll give it a go after I've finished upgrading.

Yes, it would take some good hours to add the size tags in all the existing img calls. But it would definitely be worth spending the time <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> .

If you do give it a try, could you track each step so it can be posted on the hack board? I'd be very much so interested in this. I wish I had done so for another hack I did, when I get the chance I'll go through it and trace it for posting.

OK. That's of course if I don't do it the 'dumb' way - laboriously tabbing from one individual image tag to the next. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Understood. I have a little tool that can search and replace anything within any directory (locally) which could do the trick, within a matter of much less time than having to go into each file to search for img calls, providing however that the syntax is the same, so manual verification would be needed. The catch with this method would be that it could not be posted as a hack... but I'll give it a try... Of course in general a "search this... and replace with this... in these files.... " recipe would help, too. The catch again would be when someone has customized files, but I wouldn't mind to do this on a fresh downloaded copy and send it to Scream if this would be of any help for a future release.

I have a little utility - ImgSize - that I got from Compuserve yonks ago that is quite magical but might not work here where the images are coded instead of directly named.

I'll see if I can get it done by this weekend, I think this is an important enough issue, to speed page build-up. Once I find that utility on my HD <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> it should only be a matter of several minutes after figuring out which codes need to be replace. Then the new variables need to be put into w3ttheme.pm and that's it, should not be more than a couple of hours in total....

The icons are tiny and come from the same server, probably are even cached there in memory.
Image size is a problem when:
picture is on another server
the other server is slower or might fail

Then sometimes the entire page waits for 5 minutes for the data on the picture.

None of these points is a problem here.

Actually, the additional code might slow down the board (a bit).

No, you're wrong. If the sizes aren't specified, the browser has to work them out before it renders the page. Assuming the page will be cached is not a good idea, either. I, for instance, *never* cache pages I visit regularly.

Actually, I've been told that dynamic pages, such as the Perl created pages of w3t, are very likely to get not cached in the first place.

I totally agree, but the problem with this is that those of use who have customized our images have different sizes. It would be great if a list were added to wt3vars.pm that lists each key image (i.e. all.gif, next.gif, etc., etc.) and with each image the size options were there. This way you can go through the list quickly and easily. It would also make future upgrades that much more simple. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Actually, my hack provides for that! Just edit e.g.
<pre> $theme{'icon_expanded_width'} = 21;
$theme{'icon_expanded_height'} = 17;</pre>

to reflect the dimensions of your expanded.gif - that's all, and this is supposed to go in the w3tthemes.pm - if you upgrade, just copy and paste that section if there are any changes to that file.

Now that I like!! Thanks! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Now can, someone come up with a way for us to customize (e.g. the theme) on a category by category basis? I have a very strong need for this. It is important that it is on a category by category basis and not just forum by forum. That is where the UBB failed miserably IMHO.

I like that idea, and would like to have that option for boards to have different themes (and also different header/footer includes), not just one theme/header/footer for the entire board. So, I'll sign.

I want this too but it carries the risk of conflict if we also let them list select boards they want to view and these boards span several categories!

Well, given a choice, I'd prefer the users not get to select forums of their choice if it meant I could change the themes for categories. It is far more important for my site (and many sites like it) to be able to customize the themes for multiple categories/forums than to allow users to create their own "prefered viewing" list.

After all, the option for users to select their own forums to view removes the need for Categories so if that option is created, it should require that a whole seperate script be used for displaying the forums anyway. Thus avoiding any conflict. These "custom" user views could by defult use the forums default theme.

You could check to see if they've called the board with multiple categories in the "?Cat=" part and if so then you could use a default theme.
