I wish, I wish, I *wish* we had gone with one standard set of Markup tags - in one lingua franca language just the way html is. In fact the way all code is.

Since I got the flagbar up to make switching back and forth between languages quick and easy, I've been working on properly internationalizing the Insert-Markup-Tag-with-1-click hack so that it is now fully functional whatever language you're using. All this has meant that I've quite often found myself posting test messages using a different language from the one I used when I set up my profile and it's exposed a problem with markup in the Signature which would affect multilingual people who regularly use several languages.

In a nutshell, I setup my sig in English using [ image ][ /image ] - now I write a message using the German language option. It's looking for [ Bild ] [ /Bild] so it doesn't recognize my tags and instead just prints out the whole thing as if it were text.

Bummer! If we *all* used the same tag this wouldn't happen.

Agreed! I think it should be one standard, close to HTML, just using square brackets instead. I find it confusing as well, since I'm using English on the forums that are in English, and was using German for the one W3T I visit in Germany... but that was sooo confuing to distinguish between "smile" and "grins" etc. that I finally gave up and switched to English... with the result that when I use "quote" that it puts that text "In reply to" in English instead of German...that is a bug IMHO... that text should always be the standard language of the Forum, i.e. the language of the site or of the majority of posts. ONE set of codes could probably reduce some of the W3T code anyway!

You'll be a bit better off with my new Insert Tags 'International' version. Using that you should be able to use either language at will. Give it a workout and tell me if it does the trick.

One day I'll set to and make all the Markup over into one standard lingua franca - English! A big number but, as you point out, it will reduce the code considerably.

Eileen,

I agree, too.

I noticed that problem early when trying out the forums software. My community is mixed: english/german. And I changed all german markup tags to english ones. It's no problem for the users to use those english markups. Everybody knows the meaning of quote, image, .... And for everything else it's no problem to understand because of your icon preview and insert hack.

The users and me feel very comfortable with that "english" solution.

Right. I'll do it next.
(Have you given the new multilingual stuff over at Amdragon a good workout? Does it hold up for you across all the differnt languages?)

Eileen,

it works very fine for me at Amdragon. It's great.

There are only two things I don't like:

- I don't like to have to login every time I visit your boards. But I guess you do want this behaviour...!?
- In online.pl I don't like this wide space between the flag and the user name. Could you reduce this space?

I don't see any further problems.

You shouldn't have to login every time! (I don't.) Maybe your cookie has crumbled - have a look at my FAQ for a reminder of where to find it.

I wondered about that space too. I'll cut it down.

Eileen,

hmm, strange things happen.

I deleted the three cookie lines in my cookies.txt (Netscape 4.61 for OS/2) but it seems that no new cookies will be created. I still have to login every time when I visit your boards. This happens on OS/2 as well as on Windows 98 (with Netscape Navigator 4.70).

Is there something going wrong with the cookies on your forums?

Eileen,

it's becoming more strange... :-(

On different systems (Windows, OS/2, Sun Solaris) with different browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape 4.61, Netscape 4.7) I have to login every time I visit your forums. The cookies don't work. And I don't believe that all cookies on all machines on all browsers are corrupted.

Another strange thing: On all systems, I don't see the flag line with Netscape Navigator. Neither with 4.61 nor with 4.7 nor with 2.02. The line is not existing when viewing the forums with Netscape. Only in Internet Explorer I can see the flag line.

:-(

I just keep getting logged out when looking at your Who's Online page, eileen... when I go back to the main index (or any other page) from there, without relogging in, it looks like I never logged out... hmmm.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Eileen,

maybe it helps a bit when I tell you that I only have to select "Login" to log in. I do *not* need to out the username and password form - this form doesn't appear. I'm immediately logged in after selecting "Login".

Well, I don't know what this means, but..... perhaps you have an idea..... I never saw such behaviour on my forums or on other forums. After selecting "Login" I usually see the log in form where I have to enter my user information data. But this form doesn't appear at Amdragon.....

No, that deepens the mystery even further. Normally if you click Login you get the login form - unless you're already logged in, then you get your start page (that's how Check Private works).

Yes, that's how I know that feature.

Because of this "unexpected" behaviour I thought that you wanted this as *feature* and so I didn't send you a notice about that. I only thought by myself "Why does she do this?"...... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I can't imagine what's going wrong here. I can't believe that I have problems with cookies on all of my machines. That's simply "impossible", but you never know....

Are you by any chance going to my forums by just typing <A HREF="http://www.amdragon.com" target="_new">http://www.amdragon.com</A>? If so that's the answer. That redirects you to the right place (via .htaccess) but it doesn't know who you are.

Lurkers: Does anybody know how to handle that?

Aha! Now with that, I was able to duplicate the problem - indeed, when you use the "plain" URL it says I'm not logged in. I then clicked on "Main Index" to refresh it, and then I was logged in. Interesting behavior!

How about using a single frame? That's how I'm doing it. No complaints so far! That also hides all the "revealing" information in the browser address field that people could be tempted to hack around with.

because you would not be redirecting... at www.amdragon.com you would have a frameset... load your forums into the main frame.... the url line reads www.amdragon.com, but you are really generating everything from your cgi-bin directory...

Eileen,

just create a frameset with *one* frame (call this frameset "index.htm" for www.amdragon.com). This "frameset" should contain one single frame. Fill this frame with the link to the forums. That's all. That'd work as expected, and the users won't see the script url's in the url bar of the browser. You don't need to redirect.

I point them back to www.commTalk.de. I want the users to use the frameset, not just the direct url's. You simply have to edit the language files.

Well, I use a different approach than Carsten on this one... I just use the "true" URL... but Carsten has a point, but I want to give my users the convenience to to straight to the correct thread. So it reveals the complete URL there - no big deal in my opinion. My objective is to allow users to use a simple looking URL to bookmark the forum, not a mile long one <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> .

By the way, I just got done downloading NN6 - they sure changed the looks of the interface... will take some getting used to... and what I don't like is how it handles some of the tables - especuially small ones get blown up, the menu on my site looks really silly this way, but it also does it to the W3T, e.g. the table line "Feature Wishlist - Thread views: 125 - [buttons]" is now much fatter. On the plus side, the images don't jump around like crazy as in IE5.5... can't win, eh?

The way you do it is exactly what I'm after: an easy to remember bookmark but direct access to a notified message. I may give it a whirl after all... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: NN6 (off-topic)
Well, at least it looks a lot different from the 4.07 that I had before. I just found out I still have it, since I installed into a different directory. Whew! Well, but a webmaster must check the site with various browsers... this one seems to be a new HTML programming challenge, at least on my version it makes things look QUITE different... *sigh* one of the first things I clicked on, "Cutomize", was just a dead link, 404 on the Netscape site... *sigh again*

Hm, just wanted to check it out for you, and the Main Index looks fine - except that NN still does not display the proper font sizes within the tables, e.g. the Categories are supposed to be bigger - but I got this error when clicking on "Info Booth":

System Error: DBD::mysql::db do failed: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'AND Rd_Commit = 0 ' at line 5 at w3tfilter.pm line 251.

By the way, this error occurs only for a user that is NOT logged in - after logging in, I did not have this error!

Back to NN6 - it seem on W3T it only makes that line bigger that I mentioned before - in showflat (and probably showthreaded) the cell height is overproportional for the e.g "Info Booth Thread views: 9 [buttons]". Everything else looks okay.

Thanks, Gerrit. I'll keep trying until I get the download.

I've only just discovered that problem when you're not logged in. It's connected to the Mark Read hack that I'm still messing with. I should have taken it off by now because it's too cpu intensive but I wanted to see if I could get it working properly first...
