my web host has .pl files mapped to perl, but not .cgi.

they tell me that their "servers are able to meet the system requirements of the UBB product"...and continue by advising that "should be able to work around this easily enough by modifying all the .cgi file extentions to .pl or .plx"

am i still able to use the UBB?

their suggestion seems somewhat ridiculous considering all the files involved in the UBB...

My web host told me exactly the same thing, but after a few phone calls to several people, they set it up.

Mapping CGI to Perl takes less than a minute to setup. If they are running NT and are saying their servers can't handle it, it means they CAN do it.... THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO DO IT!!!

Who is your web host and what OS are they running??

yes, i thought mapping .cgi to perl would be relatively simple. they claimed that doing this may affect our other clients hosted on the server.

i thought using .cgi files was a common thing...but i guess i could be wrong???

i am with webcentral, and their web hosting service operates on a Windows NT platform.

thanks...i really appreciate your feedback on this...

bonnie,

Insist that they map cgi to perl. It is a trivial configuration exercise and is not any more of security a risk than pl. You cannot just change file extensions - you also have to make extensive edits to the scripts and Infopop will not support a modified program.

If the sysadmin is concerned about other users that use cgi programs that are not Perl, they can configure only your cgi directory.

I am with WebCentral too, and they told me exactly what they told you, "it will affect other customers on the server...."

The truth is, IT DOESN'T!!!

Just log a job in the Mission Control and ask them to map CGI to Perl. And if they say it can't be done, tell them it can be done AND IT HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE.

What Hal said is correct, they are thinking they have to reconfigure the entire server settings, but they only have to re-configure the settings for your site.

The person who configured it for me was Chris Horn (Technical Account Manager).
If anybody at WebCentral says they can't do it, say that Chris Horn did it for another customer back in February.
Also make it clear to them that they don't have to change the configuration of the entire server, it CAN be done for individual accounts on a server.

Persistence will eventually pay off in the future, well it did for me anyway!!

Hope this helps! <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

What you're saying is true, however from experience as a project manager, that works in multi group projects, this is a VERY typical answer.

I was managing a project for SAP SQL and Oracle, and needed a development server from the server group that was outside the firewall or at least my ip opened because I needed a data feed from Reuters. They said it wasn't possible because they
would have to open the entire server up to the outside (The most uneducated answer I've ever seen)

I also wanted to set up a UBB that I had already purchased through budget for the users to communicate. They said that having the permissions on the ubb folder have read/write access was absolutely impossible because they'd have to open the entire web site up. Sheesh. I simply made a virtual directory paralled (as the instructions suggest) and it sat above the root html dir.

The reason for that LONG and BORING comment is that in MOST cases the inital conversations you'll have will be with people that have a very low knowledge base. Since the majority of helpdesk calls that come in do not require a high knowledge base. You're probably going to have to get to second level support somewhere, but it absolutely can be done. On any web server, any O.S. that is of course assuming they configured the server correctly during the build.

what i want to know is how to physically map the extension to perl. im running 2kas and i cant modify the pl ext to cgi, i get error "you must enter a valid path, even though i copied exactly what was in the dialog box. this is being done under WWW master properties, home directory, configuration. what is the format for a valid file path? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> oh, also i am using IIS 5.

I was having the same problem. After much cussing and 2 hours later, I cam to the conclusion that you must have Perl installed in a single name folder (ie: no spaces). I'm using ActivePerl. I installed it to C:Perl. The full path in IIS5 is "c:perlbinperl.exe %s %s". Don't forget to put ".cgi" under the extension option. That should do it for you. Hope that helps!

My server is www.arsys.es in Spain and they are clueless or are avoiding me.

They also told me to change all the .cgi to .pl, I laughed SOOO LOUD!!!!

I will insist and see if they crack under the pressure.

I do believe you win this month's thread necromancy award. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

If your host is unwilling or unable to map .cgi, then you should seek out a new host.

Hey Charles, thanks.

Actually, as admin of my board, I always say there is no thread too old <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes, I agree about the host. Actually, I am just trying to move the board to this host since I have a v-server with them and my old host is giving me probs. The old host is UNIX and this one NT and all I want to do is move the board, upgrade to 6.72 so that I can then export to Eve. Sounds like a simple task BUT the problem is that the old host (crapola at www.easyspace.co.uk - NEVER USE THEM!!!!) has my board hostage as of 2 days ago with a software error on file locks (see http://www.multimadrid.com/cgi-bin/jersbbucgi/ultimatebb.cgi ).

They are non-responsive to my support tickets and i am hating life right now.

i digress.

Saludos,
jer...

p.d. now not only have i revived an ancient thread but i have also taken it waaaaayyyy off-topic <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

if you are able to access FTP, you should be able to get your site downloaded. Then you can follow the steps HERE to get it working on your new server.

There are also people at UBBDev that can be hired for small fees to do this for you if you don't want to.

Someone who I know does a good job can be found here

We actually had a ticket about Easyspace the other day. They have switched their entire architecture to something NFS based, and have intentionally broken file locking in the process. We do not consider this a sane act...

Great to hear that you've been migrated. If you have any questions about eve, you can wander over to http://community.infopop.net/eve/ubb.x/a/cfrm/f/1803043405 and get some help <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
