I'm running UBB 6.05 on a W2K server. Lately I've had a very strange issue come up. There are two things happening, and I'm not sure if the UBB has anything at all to do with the problem. But that's where the problem is mostly observed, like 99.9% of the time. It has been observed on the board and in the control panel. The only other place on the entire site where a similar problem has happened was our interior home page (www.smgfan.com/index1.html) where one random image sometimes appears instead of the page.

Problem #1: Internal Server Errors galore - often when replying to a message, a user is confronted with an http 500 error - internal server error. Often the use can back up, re-submit and everything's fine. Or, it can take them several minutes to finally get it to go through.

Problem #2: Random Image Replacement: any image in the ubb folder may find itself suddenly changed to any different image file on the site, even images nowhere near the UBB folder. Imagine how interesting things get when this happens to the background image or the smilies.

The board was recently moved, but it did work fine for a few weeks after the move. There is a stars hack, but that was added 6 months ago and there were never any problems like this.

Here's the board:
http://www.smgfan.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Here's a couple topics where people describe the problems:
http://www.smgfan.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000168

http://www.smgfan.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000194

Any thoughts, speculation, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Please upgrade to 6.1.0.3 - it will either solve the ISE issue, or cause a more detailed error.

As for the image replacement... uh, that's straight up impossible. And considering that all the posters appear to be using AOL, I'm going to tenatively blame it on AOL's caching scheme.

This image replacement problem is not just AOL's caching, because I have seen the problem myself, and I don't use AOL. Plus, we're talking random images - different every time, never had any business on the pages they're displayed on, yet they belong to the site. So it's got to be a problem on the original server. As you can imagine my ISP is going nuts trying to figure out what's happening. I'm figuring "it's a windows server...why am I surprised?"

It probably is an unusual problem that has absolutely nothing to do with the board.

Thanks for the help, I'll get the upgrade. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Oh, it's a Windows server? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

The next time it happens, right click on the incorrect image and select properties - does the URL in the properties box match the correct image, or the wrong image?

Yep...I'm on windows because I learned Cold Fusion first, which only runs on Windows. Now I'm furiously getting up to speed with MySQL and PHP so I never have to use another window server again. Too much unexplainable phenomena for my taste. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

The URL in the properties box was for the image that was supposed to be there. So correct address, wrong image. And it's like roulette - ANY image on the site can show up there. And never the same one twice, and it only happens now and again.

That is ... more than bizarre.

Does this happen ANYWHERE else on the site?

The only other place it was ever noted besides the board and the UBB CP was on the interior home page at http://www.smgfan.com/index1.html, where on a few occasions a single image appeared in place of the entire page. In that case, it would also show a random image.

Apparently a lot of people now have checked code all over the site and not found any problems. My guess is it's a Microsoft bug that hasn't been identified yet.

Are you running the board with the PHP accelerator enabled?

My board did similar things when I enabled PHP. I would get random HTML, random HTML colors, wrong images showing up, just total chaos.

When I disabled the PHP accelerator it all went back to normal.

Sounds intriguing, but to the best of my knowledge, it's not running, unless it runs by default. I never enabled PHP manually.

That could be good to know for a future problem.

The PHP Accelerator is off by default but you can double check in configuration settings anyway.

Ok. I see the UBB accelerator option now after I've upgraded. It wasn't running, because there was no such option in 6.05.

Just upgraded to 6.1.0.4, still have all the same original problems, and also seems to run a little slower now...

I don't know what to tell you - the behavior you describe can not be caused by the UBB...

Finally figured out what caused the errors. The perl mapping was wrong. I used forward instead of backward slashes that day, don't ask why. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Somebody out there, please learn from my mistakes. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I find it beyond bizarre that a pathing error with Perl would cause that... *o_O*

I may have one more clue - we're getting something like 20,000-30,000 page views a day and it could be that it's asking too much of the UBB, causing page errors. I think that the perl mapping errors were contributing but may have only been one of a few issues. For example we still get random images, but not nearly as often, and the ISEs are practically gone. After upgrading to 6.1.0.4, I have a slow board and occasional "This routine has confused my poor little brain! at ubb_lib.cgi line 1854" errors. I'm already getting some help for this, just thought I'd pass on the info.
