May have posted this initally in the wrong section so here goes:

After installation of UBB6 I thought it was all working okay, etc. I tested registering a new account and after submitting the new user it goes to a blank white screen. The user is registered and logged in if you refresh the screen or go back.

Is this a current glitch or something that I have done? Will scare off new people as they will have no way of knowing if they have made it online right away.

I did as much checking of my system as I could but it is still happening. If anyone has an idea or if this is a glitch in the beta please let me know. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Well it is somewhat comforting to know that it is not something that I have done myself. I understand this is just a beta so I'm upset about it at all, I am just hoping it gets fixed shortly.

I am having the exact some problem. The members are becoming logged in, but i'm not sure if it will stay permanent. HOWEVER the member files themselves are not being written.

Peejay,

I'm having the same problem that you are. After I create the Admin account it presents me with a blank screen. Looking in the Members directory I can see the account I created, but the UBB does not recognize it. Argh! <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> .

Ok... i just went back and tried to log in as one of the names i did earlier.

The log in was insuccessful, and it said the username does not exist. Apparently the "unique cookies" that ubb6 writes are being written and stored in your browser, but the script gots null before it gets to writing the member files, member total, and last number files.

Also i forgot to mention that the first time it went blank for me, the member file WAS written, but it put it as 00000001.cgi. I think its becasue my last number file was blank. Since then, i have got nothing.

Yep,
if you try to register, Ubb will createe new member file, but does not update memberlist.cgi !!! That is a problem.

Also, "email members" option from cp doesn't work eather. Could be related problem, because registraton process try to send email too...

I hate to do a "me too" post, but me too...

Once I hit the submit button for a new registration, all I get is a blank screen. I've done some checking, and the next member file xxxxxxxx.cgi is written in the Members directory, but as noted above, the memberslist, memberstotal, lastnumber and emailfile files are not updated. So, the next person to register will simply overwrite the same xxxxxxxx.cgi file, and the person's info is lost.

I've seen a similar problem when some files were FTP'd over in binary (as opposed to ASCII). However, I've re-loaded all my files from scratch, and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

The original submit calls ultimatebb.cgi with some variables. Obviously ultimatebb.cgi is working (because the board works) so I suspect a file that is included only when a registration is the problem. (Most likely ubb_registration.cgi.) Either that, or the specific code that is invoked for a registration is broken.

If I get any more info, I'll post it here.

I sure hope someone solves this one fast.

Cheers

You summed it up beautifully, I'm having the same problem 00000345.cgi keeps getting overwritten <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

FYI, here are some basic instructions on how to complete the registration process manually, once someone registers.

Edit the following files in your cgi-bin/Members directory:

  • membertotal.cgi
  • last_number.cgi
  • memberslist.cgi
  • emailfile.cgi

Since the xxxxxxxx.cgi file (where xxxxxxxx is the member number) already exists, you just have to increment the counters in membertotal.cgi and last_number.cgi, and add in a line to the bottom of memberslist.cgi emailfile.cgi. (The format for those files is pretty straightforward.)

If you turn e-mail notification on for new registrations, you can do this each time a new person registers, before their profile is overwritten.

It's not the best solution, but it gets people registered for now...

If you have any questions, just let me know.

Cheers

I just downgraded my ubb... AGAIN. I did originally plan on doing what you just said, but who wants a ubb that you have to manually write the registration files...?

Erm...
I dont know...
I dont have that problem.
Did you try CHMODing the members directory to 777 or 666?

Yep, I've confirmed that all file permissions are set correctly.

This one has me stumped, though I'm still doing some digging...

Not exactly sure if it was supposed to or not but beta 7.1 did not fix the issue with a new registration getting a blank screen.

I figured it out.. atleast on my site...

make sure that the folder and contents of /cgi-bin/Modules is uploaded <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hmmm. I already have these files. I've chmod'd them to 777, and still no luck...

Anyone else having any luck?

Ok, here's what worked for me...

Try going in to the Modules/Net and Modules/MIME sub-directories, and running the PERL packages from the command line. I bet you'll find at least one complains about something. (You'll have to run tham as "perl SMTP.pm" not just "./SMTP.pm")

When I ran Modules/Net/SMTP.pm I got:

Can't locate IO/Socket/INET.pm in @INC...

and when I ran Modiles/MIME/Lite.pm, I got:

Can't locate File/Spec/Unix.pm in @INC...

These errors indicate that the PERL packages are looking for other packages that are not installed, or are not in the include path.

In my case, they were in fact installed, but the permissions on the directories holding the referenced PERL modules was wrong. (700, should have been 755). So for example, my /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/File/Spec and /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/IO/Socket directories had the wrong permissions.

As soon as I corrected them, everything worked fine.

Hopefully this helps some of the others out there.

If you find different errors when you run your cgi-bin/Modiles/* packages, post them here, and we'll see if we can help out.

Cheers

OK... thanks to your little description there, i started playing with those files. MY BOARD NOW WORKS!

Here is exactly what i did.

1. uploaded all my old cgi from 547
2. deleted /cgi-bin/Members/public_names.cgi (so the upgrade will run again)
3. uploaded the whole modules folder to /cgi-bin/
4. ran /cgi-bin/ubb6_upgrade.cgi

After that, the registration problem went away.

I'm having this problem too (UBB6 beta 7.1) -- I tried Phoenix's solution, but no dice. I've done two installations -- one as an upgrade, and one as a new installation. In both cases, attempts to create a new registration give me the blank screen (for the new installation, that means I can't create the original administrator profile).

ubb6_test.cgi confirms that my directories and permissions all check out. Modules is at 777. I don't have access to my perl installation to see if my perl module permissions are out of whack as cdnArmy suggests above.

At the moment, I'm dead in the water, but it looks like I'm in good company with this bug, looking at other posts across the board.

I am running UBB6 on a Windows NT server and am of course having the problem as well. So I cannot do the chmod anyway, permissions are a little simplier to setup on this platform as far as that goes. Hope to see something happen with this soon.
