IE7 RC1 -> IE7 Released Version. Forums are running slow : Shout problems Not any more What was happening to me was the following. i was forever getting timing out pages, hanging, shout box not sending, and general performance issues... (Page loading). BUTIve just installed IE7 Released version. And my forums and shout box dont have any issues anymore, its amazing, its like someone has just hit the super fast button. My forum are running like a rocket now, pages are instant i can chat in the shout box with out worring. Ive been testing it all day and its great. Not 1 error or problem. Hope that helps, i thought the topic title would get you more intrested than saying IE7 is Released lol... Its not a plug for IE7 its my experience i'm passing on as i was one of a few that complained about forum speed on the beta forums. Mark.

I'm installing IE7 right now... and I'm hoping it'll be less retarded than all previous versions. But I don't have my hopes set too high. We'll see....

LMAO!! Before you can install Windows Internet Explorer 7, you must verify that your copy of Windows is genuine.... Ahh well, so much for that! :/

I'm in no rush to "upgrade" to a (likely bigger) security/feature hole than IE6

Blaime me for everything, nav (Dave) does it, I'm used to it ... Then again, I could go posting to a teletubbies BBS with dave's name like someone does to the power rangers one...

I just figured out that teh shout box REALLY slows done the forum. I still have my 6.5 install up (and live) and Threads 7 running on the same server, but only I can access it. When I have the Shout Box on, the site just seems to hang forever when I click from the Portal Page to the Forums page. As soon as I turn off the shout box (hide it), viola, the site runs 10 times faster. What is it about the shout box that causes the pages to load so much slower? (I'm using IE6).

Ive had to switch off the shout box on my forums, and now on these forum the right coloum. (Shout Box).
It has come to light in another thread that its an IE Ajax issue, that's causing slow forums, page hangs etc.
I was becomming really fustrated with the amount of times i would have to close all windows and lauch a new window be able to post.
My text editor was always on standby when posting, so i could copy and paste before closing down IE7.
So if you experiencing any of the problems listed try switching off the shout box and you can make your own mind up, for me its a massive leap in performance and enjoyment.
My forums and these forums...

I never had it on for my main forums; I have it on with my test forums simply because i've been working on styling and need to make sure the shoutbox looks "ok" heh.

Are all of these UBBT 7.x running on Linux flavors? I'm running on Windows 2003 and don't notice a difference if it's on or off.
Speed seems to remain the same for me, pretty dang snappy.

Linux for me I had to get my own box so i could complete the upgrade from classic to threads and i was over my shared hosts database limit. I say lucky you, as not everyone is effected, shame as it could be good. As above its possibly an ajax and IE 7 issue. Rick said in another thread.

CentOS is a debranded Red Hat Enterprise; so if it's good enough for RHEL (which one has to pay for) it's good enough for me

I'm having slowness issues too. It's definitely a server issue.
23:20:15 up 108 days, 8:17, 3 users, load average: 2.95, 5.01, 7.09
You can see my load average drop drmatically since disabling it. RHEL4 server.

You should check your "top" and se what's being hit so hard... also "ps -auxf" should provide some process information...

Odd why a nix box would have this issue and windows box does not.
Is there anything special in the php coding that targets a Linux vs. Windows system to do anything?

NT, it could be something as simple as he's been rooted via an insecure script and hasn't yet discovered it; which is actually pretty common... Look at phpbb's long history of security issues that allowed remote inclusion

suppose so, but that would sure suck as it would then appear that maybe at least 2 or 3 users are in a similar situation. Possible though an odd coincidense.

Prior verisons of threads6 had such a glitch, that was repaired, and a lot of users came from threads; so it is possible...
(shameless plug: I do server maintenance as well! lol)

Top and ps just simply shows httpd, it doesn't show the page being accessed. If I access the /server-status page for the server, it simply shows ubbthreads.php. I understand that old 6.5.x versions had an exploit available. I don't believe I am affected by this. I can't find any cause for it. No extraneous user accounts, all ports can be accounted for via netstat, no hidden files or processes that I can find. Here's my current load without shoutbox: 22:57:55 up 110 days, 7:54, 3 users, load average: 1.40, 1.72, 1.85 I just turned on the shoutbox and here's the load: 23:04:42 up 110 days, 8:01, 3 users, load average: 3.02, 2.41, 2.08 23:08:23 up 110 days, 8:05, 3 users, load average: 3.15, 2.68, 2.25 What I also don't get is that CPU, memory, and IO usage seem low enough that the load reporting shouldn't be this high. It's not touching swap. 88 processes: 87 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: cpu user nice system irq softirq iowait idle
total 45.8% 0.0% 4.1% 0.3% 0.4% 0.0% 49.1%
cpu00 44.7% 0.0% 3.1% 0.0% 0.1% 0.0% 51.8%
cpu01 46.9% 0.0% 5.1% 0.7% 0.7% 0.0% 46.3%
Mem: 1538872k av, 1380464k used, 158408k free, 0k shrd, 121344k buff
771500k actv, 166136k in_d, 24252k in_c
Swap: 1156660k av, 0k used, 1156660k free 812496k cached I have 230 people online viewing the forums right now. Pretty normal traffic with about a high of 300-325 maybe during the day. I think there's too much of a coincidence.

What if you enable/disable another island do you get similar results?
I have not looked at the code but odd for it to be so high unless people are actively using it, but just being on without use doesn't seem to make a lot of sense why it would increase load.
