1. Download the latest build from the members area. 2. Extract the archive to your hard disk (or to the server with any available utilities). 3. Upload (or move) all files EXCEPT for the cache_builders/custom, includes and styles directories. 4. Ensure chmods. All directories should be 777. All files should be 666. 5. After uploading (or moving) all directories, and ensuring all chmods are correct, run the install/upgrade.php script. 6. After you've gone through the upgrade procedure in the upgrade.php file, be sure to REMOVE the install and importers directories.
NOTE Please be sure to create a backup of your database and files before upgrading your installation; the upgrade should happen without a hitch, however, it's better to be safe than sorry...

Not sure about line 4 - I would be wary about making all directories 777 and all files 666.

What about language files? I'm not too sure about this but if you make any changes to the language files will they be overwritten when you upload the upgrade? When you go through the upgrade process it displays a page with language file changes and asks you if you want to update them. I'm a little confused about this process.

Not sure about line 4 - I would be wary about making all directories 777 and all files 666. I'm basing #4 off of the install instructions; in fact I prefer files 644 and directories (other than cache and templates/compiled) 755. @Scriptkeeper Language files and templates must be 666 if you plan to use the web-based editors on them. I don't edit my wordlet fiels, so I'm unsure as to if they're updated completely

Sorry - what I meant was the instructions do not mention directories such as scripts, libs etc.. So not sure if we should be doing a blanket change to 777/666

According to initial statements "everything" should be 777/666; personally I say that nothing should be... IF you PLAN to use the built in editors, I myself would recommend chmods of the template files 666 and wordlet files 666 but other than that, I would recommend for securities sake to only have them 755/644.

Yeh, for users who insist on customizing their graphics, you should create a new folder with your own images, so that an upgrade does not overwrite your graphics...

That route works as well, the route mentioned here is the "quickest"/"most safe" way in my opinion, and is that which Rick has everyone do... A lot of people will get quite lost with your route

I would also recommend a backup of both your files and your database prior to any upgrade - better to be safe than sorry (of course the upgrade should go fine, but every webhost is different)

When backing up the MySQl table is the control panel option a sufficient tool for full restoration. The reason I ask is that MYSQl is new to me and my host has me on a Windows2003 box. With 7.2 coming out of beta I want to upgrade but I have not been able to educate myself on MySQl well enough yet to feel comfortable. using the tools provided by my host

You would want to backup the whole database not just a table.

That is my question. In the UBB control panel if I select the All Tables option it creates a file for each table in the backup directory. Is that the same as backing up the whole database to restore UBB? Or do I need to use something else. I believe my host is providing PHPADMIN ? but I have not been through all the docs yet.

The backup tool within the UBB.threads control panel is kind of the last resort you'd want to use. It's the slowest method to do a backup and is there for those cases that there is no other method available. It works, but it's pretty slow.
If your host is providing phpadmin, then that would definitely be a better option.

Even if they don't have phpAdmin they must have another tool like it within the Main Website Control Panel. The same place you would have been when you created the original database.
Either there or another location within the Website Control Panel (not the UBB control panel) and find one that does database backup. You should also find one that backs up the entire Website which you should run once in a while as your host provider may not be backing up your data, often it's up to you.

I already back up the web files FTP but the MYSQl database (New to me) is on another server. Just anxious after upgrading from Classic and wanted to make a backup. So you are telling me that the UBB control panel will only backup the tables even with the all tables option selected. To make a full backup I need another tool such as PHPADMIN. Back to the PHPADMIN DOC files I guess. Where is the match for the candle.

It'll make a backup of all the tables if you select all, it will just be a very slow process.

My control panel is HELM There is a tool called PHPMYADMIN but it just seemed easier at this piont to use the UBB control panel. The board looks to be only about 15MB so that is not that big of a deal to download the backup folder. But if the UBB tool will not provide me with a complete backup I will just read and read til I learn it.

15mb is no biggie.. you are fine then..
i'm still stuck (in my brain) on the 1.5gb database that i just finished upgrading..
phpmyadmin couldn't even deal with it.. i had to go to the console and do it..
good luck!!

If you're on a Linux/Unix machine, you can use the Command Line tools via SSH to create a database dump (backup of the mysql database) by inserting the command: mysqldump -uusername -ppassword databasename > databasename.sql If you wish to compress the above output so that it's easier to transfer around, then you can do: tar -cvpzf databasename.tgz databasename.sql If you've compressed the output and would like to decompress it, then you can run: tar -xzvf databasename.tgz (the output will extract as databasename/ databasename.sql) And to restore said backup, after you purge data out of the MySQL database: mysql -h localhost -uusername -ppassword databasename < databasename.sql

You know, I was thinking about saying "if you'd like to compress the output, then run..." but figured it'd be above a lot more people... But I'l update none the less!

Well, I'm not a windows guy so i'm not 110% sure of your options; I think that with the size of your database it'd be best to use PHPMyAdmin; it's not recommended for larger databases (100mb+) as it'll die and you'll end up with an incomplete archive

Gizmo, in step #3, is it correct that at this stage all the old files are being over-written by the new ones? This is a first for us - we've only done new installations, not upgrades. So forgive the questions.

Yes, in step3 you are over writing the old files with the current ones. Questions always welcome; it's why this thread isn't in the FAQ and instead is a sticky of this forum

I am following thse instructions - I have no upgrade.php file that I can find and it wants to create new tables as I am doing this. This does not seem correct - any help would be greatly appreciated.

And if there is no upgrade.php file in the install/ directory, you didn't upload all of the files from the install archive.

Sorry if this has been asked before but: I'm currently on Version: 7.2.2/Linux and am about to upgrade to 7.3.1. Is the documentation located here https://www.ubbcentral.com/doc_upgrade7.php the latest? Thanks

The upgrade process is the same, but the 7.3 is a lot different and has many new options. If you can I would try installing it locally on your system and playing with it before installing it on your live site. That way there won't be any surprises with user/group configurations, etc..

Should I just download the entire forum to my hard disc?
Thanks

Hi Morgan,
What host are you on Linux or Windows and what type of access do you have? You can FTP the files to your local hard drive for testing after you've exported the DB to a text file.
Haven't tried it but maybe one of the Admin tools on your site will allow a direct file copy down/export or you might be able to do a FULL site backup and download that locally (that is actually better, then if your ISP has a drive failure or something like that then you have a backup of your site)

Ntdoc, I'm on a Linux shared server, FTP access, sounds as a long download as I'm on the slowest ADSL and have about 215000 messages in the forum. it is about all about 400MB. Would not know how to fix this well kno how to download but not get it to work locally.

Well without SSH then you'd have to go into your control panel phpMyAdmin and backup your DB. Then FTP it to your local box. Here is a link on doing it (just Googled it, you can search for other ideas on how to do it if needed. I use SSH so haven't used phpMyAdmin in a long time myself). How to backup your Mysql database with phpMyAdminThen using WAMP it makes it pretty easy to setup and test your forum locally.

I sure hope that upgrade instructions for V8 are easier to follow. Too bad Multihack went away.
I have had the same problem with previous upgrades where it overwrote my Language file, my FAQ, and my ICONS. The instructions are too simplistic and don't take into account some relatively simple modifications. These shouldn't be considers "hacks", but approved mods.
