I think the purpose of having this "fake" email address displayed is so that when spammers come by, they can't steal our "real" email address for spamming.
However, shouldn't any registered user be able to click on this "fake" displayed email link and still be able to send an email to the real email address? I mean, doesn't the system know to do this?
If it's not set up this way, then why make it a link?

It's not a fake email address, Trixie. It's an optional item that people can enter or not. For example, one person might use their ISP email address for registration, but a hotmail email address for public use. Most of my users don't input one for public use.

Theres several options actually...
An admin can set the profile to be viewable by guests, which includes web spiders; so you COULD end up with a "private" email shown to the public...
so, it can be used as: 1. A spam deterrent whereby users can insert their email such as: gizmo[at]undergroundnews[dot]com 2. As Rose points out, you can use it to allow some people to spam you with seemingly board related material to another email address.
