Hi - don't know what's happened but we have lost all our registered users on the board (although their data is still there in members). I think the solution is probably to rebuild them, but we've lost the admin user as well! How can I get into the system to rebuild users without the admin user? Thanks

Can you check to see if the vars_config.cgi file still exists, and is chmodded 777? Also check to be sure data exists in the file and that it's not currupted...
I'm thinking that something may have happened to the file, as it holds the paths to your member data it could be the reason it's not working properly...

vars_config.cgi exists and everything looks ok with it (the paths seem correct). Just can't login as anyone.

Managed to fix it! Browsing round the files I found that the memberslist.cgi file only had two names in it (instead of the 1400 odd it should have had). I manually added our admin user to the file and was then able to login as admin. The rebuild/reindex from the control panel fixed the rest. I, for one, am very relieved! Thanks for your help Gizmo (it was your question about the config file that started me browsing).

And this points out that you should be making a backup of your database each night or at least as often as possible.

True, always keep a backup of the vars__*.cgi files, the Members folder and as much of the forum folders as you can store  Many ftp programs can be set to do this automagically now.

And this points out that you should be making a backup of your database each night or at least as often as possible. What database? It's UBB.Classic, it's all flatfile baby! But yes I agree with Allen, routinely backing up your vars files should be a must for classic users
