try ms bootvis and run to optimze, not the analyse. This will rebuild the prefetch files and the bootup goes most time much faster.

Well it should not operate that way. It is designed on purpose to automatically analyze and readjust file layout on it's own.
Though defrag and file layout can only speed up a system so much when it's already being performed weekly. If it was never performed for years and then someone comes along and does it then it is really noticeable.
Microsoft claims to have some fixes coming for these slow loads hopefully around Jan of coming year.

'eh the "non-free" versions of diskkeeper are better than the free ones (such as the one that comes with windows XP)

Diskeeper is the same one that is built into Windows XP it's just trimmed down to remove some of the automation stuff.
I used to use Diskeeper but wow their marketing machine is too much, on the verge of a full on SPAM machine.
I use Perfect Disk 8 right now as they actually have some better benchmarks than Diskeeper and are much more liberal on what you can run it on. Diskeeper charges you extra if you run it on TB file systems which is a crock of $#%@%^
All in all they're all quite similar and all use the built-in MS API calls to move the files around so not like one is SOOOO much better than another. Some just have other features than others and some have better pricing models

lol that is quite a crock about the tb file systems...
I've played with perfectdisk, but rather like diskeeper; guess it's because i'm used to it :snicker:

odd, it doesn't take nearly that long for our notebook to boot up. I need to time it next time. 54 seconds, not too bad. Vista Home Ultimate w/AVG, Ad-Aware, F@H, I-tunes and a few other apps loading at startup

For me, it works really well My boot time is now 35 secs to user screen... then another 35 - 40 to a fully downloaded page in IE. FF takes a few secs longer.

Well all I can say having not tried it myself on Vista is that if it does work as you say then it's broken on Vista.

My old PC died and I couldn't be bothered (have time) to fix it and it was a good excuse to upgrade anyway. I usually build them myself but I priced up some new PCs and compared the prices of parts to do it myself and found that the pre-built packages were cheaper. I didn't have an option of OS so it came with Vista Home Premium installed. The only problems I had was in the initial few days when I found that some of my existing software wasn't compatible. I was advised to "upgrade to XP " but after a quick surf round to the developers website a patch download soon fixed this. New drivers for existing hardware was also easy to find. Since then I've had no problems at all. The only thing that I have noticed is a slightly longer boot time since I installed a Creative Technology Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card but now I know what's causing it I can live with it. Microsoft has released details of the Vista Service Pack if you can make any sense of it: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Overview
