If I do a search going back one year, across all forums on my board with this string (including quotes) I get a hit:
"I've never heard of that"

However, if I do a search with this string, I get no hit:
"I've never"

Anyone know why? Thanks.

yes, Mysql's Full Text index (FTI) will throw away the more common words as it builds the index over time. I believe there's a 50% limit that it imposes by default.

In other words, FTI tends to only save the less common words in the index over time.

Evidently 'Never' and "I've" are too common and that is why you are forced to add more specifics to get hits.

This is off the top of my head and i can look into it deeper, but i think that it boils down to a word ranking algorithm that is in place.

There are also common words that it won't search for either.

I've posted a list here but don't feel like searching for it right now, but that too could be the issue.

I'm hoping to get the time to put in the option to use the old search engine in 7.3. Basically where it uses "LIKE" instead of fulltext searches. It still performs well on a moderate sized board and is much more flexible that fulltext searching.
