I feel your pain Mark I'm trying to help a friend who has years of data on an un-backed-up drive. It has a corrupted boot sector. Sometimes I can get it through the POST and even through the auto-detect - but then it hangs. (On very infrequent ocassions I've gotten it to boot and even seen the files - but not had another drive to back-up to.) I've tried it on primary master - primary slave. secondary master - secondary slave. Trying my best for her - tearful women have that effect.... Driv, I realize you're trying to help but you HAVE to be careful. All these changes you're making could cause the system to actually lose the data permanently. Best method is to remove the drive and place it into another unit and use some dedicated software to attempt the retrieval. (unless she is willing to pay $500 to $1,500 for professional retrieval - which I doubt) You could also try creating a bootable repair CD Ultimate Boot CD for Windows Already has many free tools to assist in data repair and recovery.

I should have mentioned that I've removed the defective hard drive and I'm trying to boot it on a spare 'skeleton' of a PC. (Pretty much as you suggested.) Thanks for that link - looks good - I'll look into it

There are going to be thousands and thousands of people out there who won't even think about backing up their files and are going to find out the fragility of the digital age the hard way. When it's gone, it's gone. There's no hard copies, no negatives, no records, tapes, etc. just a corrupt hard drive with all your data locked in. You've got that right my friend! You'd think that most people would be aware of this problem, but from what I've seen, everyone trusts their hardware implicitly. Yep, when it's gone, it's gone!

But THAT is the point. If your data is only on that WD MyBook then what do you do when you wake up and find that it's DEAD as a doornail with no warning?
You need to have important data on 2 or more separate media locations that are NOT tied to each other in any way.
Tape is the longevity tried and true winner just often not affordable or practical for home users.

The mybook is for soft backups, the dvdr's are for hard backups... Then the original crap is spread over a pc and a laptop and a server lol

Well hope you don't run into same issues I have with that method. I have probably close to 500 CDs that I've used for backups of data and for backups of my software install disks. 99% of them have never failed me but about 1% of them have come back for some data with CRC errors or similar and was unable to recover the data and for some it was the only copy. Works reasonably well overall but sure upsets you when it's an important document and you can't get it and don't have any other copy. I still use CD/DVD for backups but I now keep 2 copies on hard drives (would love to do Tape but as said, too expensive for home to run an LTO2 or LTO3 drive and tapes) So hopefully between local copy, plus often 2 other hard drive copies and occasional CD/DVD I should not lose data again (unless Earthquake, Fire, Flood, or something similar) I keep CloneCD images of my purchased software install disks as well so that I can burn a disk or mount it virtually any time I want or need it and then I can keep the originals in their box. Other topic... just noticed that the BUG forum needs 66 posts to reach 6666

I've been known to rip ISO's of software disks I have so I can have them stored on PC as media that gets used tends to get scratched lol...

Happy Birthday driv Well spotted that man. Happy Birthday driv. Have the rest of the day off. Yes, I know it's 18:10 but it's the first chance I've had to get on here today and anyway, it's the thought that counts.

I'm actually at my Mums house right now (that's 'moms' house for our transatlantic brethren ) I showed this thread to her (my mum) and she thought it was great - in that wonderful way the pre-net generation have...... Ooooh - you've never met these people and you're friends with them - well well well - well, I never. ..and then.... Why do they all call you driv?

Happy Birthday Driv ( Sorry I'm Late) Well ive been so god dam stressed at the wasted time ive spent trying to sort my pc, ive had to take a few days away from it, or it was going to be launched out the window lol.. Ive now decided to 1) Send my 500gb Off to be Exchanged as it makes a strange noise if i spin it forward backwards next to my ear. Its a matalic noise, and Hitachi have send send it in and have it replaced, < Thinks > That was a little too easy, i'm thinking they know this model has issues?? 2) Build a new pc. As i have a lot of new components on my old pc, which will come over, and i will just get more of those Japanese's PATA to SATA Converters And over Time convert my drives. So now im looking into the cpu / motherboard / memory configurations, as i now have forgot whats good and whats not, and what's not worth spending that much on. IMO a good pc is more like a super pc nowerdays at the fraction of the cost. But with christmas coming up, i'm inclined to wait until its over and the sales begin. I'm staying on an XP platform, not ready for vista yet... So i'm stressed but getting there slowly and working from my laptop now, as you guys say at least i'm in control of this shut down and not picking up the pieces. Is that right that Vista Home Premium code is backward compatible with XP and 2000 and ME ?? Hopefully life will begin to pick up again soon, ive done well 4 years without problems, so i can count my blessings at home. ( Not my server lol) Will Take a look at that link NT Ive been using some of the recovery utilities on Norton Ghost 9 and there pretty neat, Examine Partition info recovered a full disc of data, just changed the numbers to match my other drives. Some how that screwed up trying to make a dual boot. See what i mean <stress>

All I do know is that laptops are getting cheaper - purchased one for each of my children for Christmas - £168 each - okay not the fastest processor - but it did include 1GB of ram They were also the first Vista machines that I have used - easy to make it look exactly like XP - so easier for the children.

Actually, laptops are cheap now adays, my mom bought her hp and Compaq laptops for about $400 USD; 1gb ram, 2+ghz processors. Myself, I spent $1800 on my laptop in 2001, 256mb ram, 40b hd, 1.6ghz "speedstep" (ie it randomly goes from 1.2ghz to 1.6ghz) p4 mobility processor...

If I think about it, and close my eyes, I can see that brandnew ferrari in the driveway There's no ferrari there, heck, I don't even have a driveway

Link is still valid here from the US
Not sure if there is some type of filtering/blocking as often when posting things here in the US others from Europe complain they can't access it.
Maybe the .divx extension is not liked by your browser. Maybe try another machine or another browser or both.

Works fine - you just need a player that will read divx file.

Windows Media Player will play DivX files. You just need to download and install the DivX Codec first.

the random jibberish is actually the content of the video, your browser just isn't putting together that it's actually a video ... Likely you may not have the divx codec installed, or windows media player just isn't cooperating
