This error is mentioned numerous times with the search option; quite simply, edit libs/mysql.inc.php, change the "showerror" line from a 0 to a 1, upload file; it will now show the error to anyone who can see it.
You'll want to change this back when you're finished however, as it could identify db names and other data your users don't really need...

The site has been unavailable every day since then, only early in the morning. Going to make a puppy face and ask blaaskaak again to take a look at it

If you follow Gizmo's steps or turn on MySQL Error logging in the control panel you can at least figure out exactly what's going on. Once we know the actual error we should be able to give proper advice.

MySQL Error logging apparently was already turned on. This is the error producing between 5 and 7 am: Script: - Line: Unable to connect to the database! - Too many connections

Are you on a shared server and not a dedicated server?
If so I would get in touch with your host and advise them of the error.

Or they are using pconnect and have more apache children than mysql connections allowed. Make sure pconnect is UNCHECKED in the control panel.

Yeh, pconnect is evil... Too bad we can't make it so they have to edit the config file by hand to enable it; so random users just don't turn it on...
Not to mention, the error is not UBB related, it is your MySQL server choking; it's either the pconnect issue, or your server is over-loaded at this timeframe and mysql is struggling to stay alive.

in the control panel, it'll be where your MySQL data resides. Master Settings >> DB, Paths & URLs >> Use Persistent Connections?

pconnect is in no way evil. It's great *IF* you know how to use it. The mantra that pconnect is evil that some of the moderators chat around here is pretty tiring.

The fact that users utilize it on overloaded vhosted servers is amusing ...
