is there any particular advantage in enabling persistent connections? are there any known issues in enabling it?

the advantage is that apache doesn't have to start a new connection with every page view. apache can spawn a new child if needed, connect to the database, and stay connected until the server is restarted.

the disadvantages can be great however, if you are not able to balance the number of apache children and connections allowed in your MySQL setup. get them out of balance and you'll likely get a ton of MySQL max connection errors or out of memory errors.

hmmm ... i do in fact have multiple domains on my VPS. is this what you mean? five of these domains use relatively simple mysql applications. so you think there are definitely no down sides, in the case of ubbthreads?

I would always recommend not using them... Unless you have the memory on the server to allow for a large amount of users on at once (I'm talking a lot, several hundred, not including guest/bots)...

It's not memory that is the issue, it's balancing your apache and MySQL. Unless you have the time/knowledge/resource don't turn it on.
