A major update to Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system could leave computers vulnerable to hackers and malware as the service pack prevents several widely used antivirus programs from operating.

The list of security products that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 blocks includes Zone Alarm Security Suite 7.1, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, and BitDefender 10. It also blocks the 2008 version of the Jiangmin antivirus product.

Microsoft said the blocks occur because the antivirus programs are not compatible with Vista SP1. "For reliability reasons, Microsoft blocks these programs from starting after you install Windows Vista SP1," (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935796)

Microsoft also said Vista SP1 prevents a small number of other programs from working properly, including Novell's ZCM Agent and The New York Times reader software.

It's not the first glitch for Windows Vista SP1. Microsoft earlier this week pulled from the Windows Update site a file that's a prerequisite to installing the service pack. The company said the file, known simply as KB937287, can cause host computers to enter an endless cycle of boots and reboots.

Also, Microsoft has delayed widespread distribution of Vista SP1 until it can resolve compatibility issues with some software drivers that control PC peripherals such as mice, keyboards, and printers.

As a result, Vista SP1 won't be available as a manual download until mid-March on Windows Update. Even then, installation will be rejected on PCs with the problem drivers. Affected users who want to access the software regardless will be able to download it directly from Microsoft.com.

Microsoft will automatically push Windows Vista SP1 to customers who have signed up for automated downloads from Windows Update starting in mid-April. Again, however, PCs that are using the incompatible drivers will be blocked from receiving it.

Windows Vista SP1 includes more than 300 hot fixes for the operating system, which Microsoft launched a year ago.

Among them: a fix for a problem in which optical disks turn blank after being formatted with Vista's Live File System; a patch for a glitch that generates an error message when large files are copied from one Vista-based computer to another over a network; and an update designed to improve Vista's speed when its operating on a computer linked to a virtual private network.

hmmm... most of those AV programs I consider viruses themselves - my computer slows to a crawl if I open a word doc just because the AV app wants to scan every keystroke :smash:

Are you sure it's not Word itself? After all, it is a Microsoft product laugh wink

That would be easy enough, but no... it's the crap app makers pass off as good AV.

For the amount of time lost due to resource hogs that are the current AV crop, the best AV is a good backup plan and a good firewall. If the random virus does get in wipe the HD and re-install. The time saved from the 99% of the time you don't have to deal with AV issues will more than pay for itself.

Yeah, I know your point. When I used McAfee on my previous machine it was quite noticeable. But my Core2Duo came with eTrust Antivirus from Computer Associates and I don't even notice it at all.

I got a boot sector virus years ago from a friend's floppy disc. Lost almost everything! (Incidentally, McAfee was the only one to get rid of it). Never again did I go without AV protection... wink

Backup plan? What's that?? whistle

These days I try to keep all my data (documents, web sites, client stuff, etc) on external drives, but back in the day it was hardly that convenient w/ floppies. I still have all my email from the past 11 years (since the virus), tho lol wink But now with a couple TB's of hard drives it gets tough again to do full backups of everything.

True - my external drive is beginning to get corrupted files for some reason. I've had to run chkdsk on it a few times in the last couple days. I'm wondering what I should do, I'd HATE to lose those files... I've got 20k+ family/travel/wedding photos on it :/

Precious photos I would back up! ...and certainly any work for clients.

I have 4 external drives. 2 were old internals from my other computer that died, which used to have (cold) swappable hard drives. And I have a small pile of even older internal drives that I need to go thru from previous systems. I guess with all this I could be backing up more often. laugh Large externals are getting nice and cheap these days!

And what does that have to do with backing up data David?

I've been in the business many years and we've had to replace more than our fair share of failed hardware on a Mac as well and the user's often lost their data as well since it could not be recovered from some drives.

BACKUPS, BACKUPS, BACKUPS - doesn't matter what OS you're running on. Sooner or later hardware fails (if you're lucky you get a warning) and if it fails and damages the platters or heads then you're going to lose your data unless you're wealthy and can afford a white room recovery.

As for Allen, if your having to run CHKDSK daily or every other day then you better backup that DATA ASAP - you should not have to be checking all that often.

I think that you forgot what the topic was about when it was started.

Hey, sense of humor means everything... my "worry" was even tongue in cheek... even a place like this can use a little light-heartedness sometimes... everything doesn't have to be written in PHP laugh smile
