Hi,
I have just noticed that I have a large number of core files within my threads directory.
I seem to have one file per day at around 50-90mb in size!!!
The files are core.xxxx where xxxx is a random number.
Any thoughts as to what they are, or what is creating them in threads.
It would appear to not contain any useful data.
Thanks.

On a linux server.
These are being generated by threads in some way - or a linked script.

Just checked 7.2.2 install and my 7.3b test (No posters) and both directories are clear of any core files? Found this on a Google http://gallery.menalto.com/node/47830could be an apache dump??

It seems that every search turns up 'it's ok to delete' but why are they there in the first place

core.xxxx are dump files from the server. The site crashed and generate this file. Its equal the windows .dmp file if you get a BOD. So check the server why it crash and restart the site. Sometimnes are memory problems or load problems. Old versions of php or mysql can be the problem too if they have security holes and someone try to use them. This can cause a core dump.

no memory or load problems or even crashes. The only location on the server for these core files are the threads forum. Using php5 / mysql5 on a 4GB Raid 10 on a dual intel Xeon-Harpertown 5430-Quadcore - so fairly high powered All very strange....

Any odd errors in the error/access logs that have the same or close timestamp as the core file?

Any odd errors in the error/access logs that have the same or close timestamp as the core file? Basically, as Zarzal stated, this comes from a apache/php problem. UBB is probably calling a function that's making PHP crash.
You might try a PHP upgrade if you're not running their latest version.
