I'm sure a few others might have questions like this, so here goes. 1 Language files: Many of my language files have been adjusted. With the upgrade will I have to change them again? Can I just keep copies and re-upload what I had or will I have to manually go in and change them again 2 Permission settings: I have a number of banned members, and members who can't used PMs etc. When I upgrade will those settings remain in place? 3 Will my CSS templates work? Will I need to save and import or will they just come on into the new 7.3 without me doing anything? 4 What exactly ddoes IRC like / me functionality mean? Thanks folks!

"IRC Like /me" means, that when someone types "/me text" it will show as "*displayname text"
Language files, don't upload language files when you upgrade, it will ask you to apply changes as needed.
Permissions, for banned users will remain; the new perm matrix is for group based settings.
Your templates will work fine, they will be upgraded in the upgrade to be compatable with 7.3 changes.

OK thank you. I get it now.
So with language files, just leave what is up there and don't replace any. But are there any new ones?
Thank you

The upgrade script should tell you which files are new, which are modified, etc.

I need to go back to the Languages question. Looking at the upgrade instructions, it seems to say I should upload the languages folder. Surely that is going to get rid of the adjustments I made to the language I used? In the above post Gizmo says: "Language files, don't upload language files when you upgrade, it will ask you to apply changes as needed." Back to the official instructions, it only make me more confused: The next screen will list the changes to the language files. If you uploaded a new copy of the "languages" directory in an earlier step, click the "I have updated my language files by hand" button. Otherwise, click the "Update my language files" button. So, what EXACTLY do I do? Can someone hand hold me through how I upgrade but keep my old changed language files? Thanks

Well, you can upgrade either way; the recommended is to overwrite the language files; it ensures everything is there no matter what; HOWEVER, if you run the upgrade script with files missing it'll tell you what is new and needs to be uploaded and will modify your files for you should you hae them chmodded 666 (so if you follow it then it's a worthwhile way of preserving changes).

So, if I overwrite them then I need to manually go into them all and change back to how I want them to be. Right?
(I'm still a little confused).

Yes, if you overwrite the files you will have to rehack them; as your modifications will be overwritten by the new files.

Ok, allow me to spell out the two ways of upgrading while dealing with language files. You have two options... You can choose to NOT upload the language files. While running the upgrade script, at the language step it will tell you what files are NEW, what need to be DELETED, and what need to be UPDATED.
You can tell it to manage the files on its own, in which case you will need to upload the NEW files to the language folder, and ensure all items within it are CHMODDED "666".
From here, it will delete the files it needs to delete, and update the language files which need to be updated. You can choose to upload ALL language files, which will overwrite any changes you have made.
When you get to the languages section in the upgrade script you can have it do any updates it notices automatically, however, you'll want to ensure that all of the files in the directory are CHMODDED "666".

I suppose what is confusing me is this.
"at the language step it will tell you what files are NEW, what need to be DELETED, and what need to be UPDATED."
OK, so I then upload just the language files that it tells me are NEW. Right?
"From here, it will delete the files it needs to delete, and update the language files which need to be updated."
How does it update the ones that need to be updated if I have not uploaded them?

... yes, if you follow option A you would only upload what it says you don't have... And how does it... It's an intelligent script that's been made to make the changes it needs to make... You really shouldn't over analyze it ...

OK, but surely you can see how it is confusing.
Surely if this intelligent script updates files, it will be overwriting any changes I made in my 7.2 files.

The intelligent script WILL overwrite changes if it's an update to an existing language string.
The update module will both add new language strings to the files, and update changed ones.
