OK I am trying to get it so that 2 colors are used in the Shout Box - each alternative post having a slightly different shade.

I've been trying for ages but unsuccessfully.... which part of the styles will that be in (I thought it would be left/right column but it doesn't seem to be),

I am pretty much clueless if it comes to stylesheets, but I do use a nifty toolbar in firefox that tells me which class is used somewhere on a page.

it uses alt-1 and alt-2 (so just change those two), or you can take advantage of the fact that it's all surrounded by a div named 'shout_content'

then your extra css can be

#shout_content .alt-1 { background: pink;}
#shout_content .alt-2 { background: blue;}

and you get what you want.. btw, i only show those colors for example.. you prolly want other stuff and also maybe not just the background colors too

when you edit your styles, there is an Extra css section at the bottom.. just slam your new stuff there for each style

by cascading the #shout-content with alt-1 and alt-2, you aren't modifying the original alt-1 and 2... so you have free reign to style the cascaded style as you like.
