After upgrading to 7.3, the notification messages are going out as HTML. Is there a way to turn this off so they remain text based as in the past?

Thanks,
Tim

Good question - I can't find it either. There isn't even the option when emailing members directly. There are separate email templates for HTML and plain text, which I assume are for My Preferences settings, but for regular notification emails, I don't see it... confused

if the email client accepts html, then they get the html version.. if they are text only, that is what they get..

the board sends 1 message with 2 formats. it's the client's decision whether to do text or html.

It should still be an option, though... wink

the option is if you set your client up to receive text only.. if you do, then you get text only..

otherwise, you get html..

i don't get what's the issue..

do you prefer text over html, even if your client can receive html?

Some people do prefer text only as I've already got complaints (just because I provide the latest Outlook, doesn't mean they want the latest features.) It's obviously a big deal to a number of folks though as everytime I subscribe to an email newsletter, etc., it seems to prompt "Would you prefer HTML or text?"

And I'll agree with you hehe...

Any email client, even web based ones, will have the option to set your preference on receiving HTML or Text based emails; the UBB sends out both, so whatever your preference is set to be will be what you SEE when you get a UBB email...

Maybe some users (well, not maybe, as I've had multiple complaints) like having a choice over which messages they receive HTML and which they don't. I shared the opinions expressed here with the most prominent of the reporters within my organization and he stated that if he totally disabled HTML, that the few mails he would like to see as HTML would need to be modified. Some people in the org wouldn't mind me stripping HTML at the bridgehead SMTP level, and some people in the org love it (like myself.)

Even if a message is RFC 1521 compliant in it's implementation of multipart/alternative content, doesn't mean it's necessarily reliably renderable across all clients either. Some HTML based e-mail services really mangle HTML messages.

And for the really extreme folks, an RFC 1521 multipart/alternative message has both text/html and text/plain, including markup and graphical content that is unessential for text clients. It's larger, requires more bits to be passed, which ultimately is more electricity, which causes more global warming wink

Pardon the RFC references though... I was an Engineer for the worlds largest single-site Exchange implementation, and world's largest IMAP implementation. The mail stuff has hind of stuck with me.

I am trying to determine best approach so I can modify the message content to include a "Please do not reply" text in the outgoing messages.

I found the following files with the text and wonder what is the best approach to modify this text? I really do not want to do this every time we upgrade the board.

LANGUAGE_CHANGES.txt
mailer.php
email. html

Thanks in advance - Geoff

I too vote for an administrator option to specify TEXT or HTML.

I'm less concerned about the client-side arguments as I am about my ability as an administrator to specify.

It's not a huge deal to me, but I do have an automatic process that processes these emails to generate an external email list which is used by MailEnable; I then export the email to my plain text database.
The HTML in there just makes my plain-text database of registrations a bit uglier and a lot bigger.

I think it would just be cool in general to allow to user to specify if they wanted plain-text or HTML messages. Most email lists, CMS, and just about everything I run into still asks "Would you like plain text or HTML?"

I can appreciate it a little more now that I am a Smart Phone user, although admittedly, I used to think "why would anyone not want HTML".

I remember a similar debate back in the early 90's when ANSI art was popping up on BBSes. "My board does an ANSI detection before sending you the graphics", but some of my people connecting at 1200 baud just weren't having it! wink

A user option will be coming for this. Not this version, because we're just about ready to release the final, but it's on my TODO.
