I've seen many similar import problems described here, though none with my exact problem. I saw several people say the importer doesn't work well with 7.3.1, but I don't have any other 7.x versions and older ones aren't available for download. (Someone suggested exporting to 7.2 and then upgrading to 7.3.1, which I'd be happy to try at this point.)

Everything succeeds with paths and permissions (except some emoticons at the start, when a permissions error pops up for a few seconds before it blitzes on with the import). It imports page after page of members up to #1227 (of 3407) and stops. No error messages in the browser or in the server logs, nada.

It lets me log into the new threads install and it works, but without any forums, etc. of course. I tried a second time with a new database and had the same problem. So I don't even have a next step at this point.

I'm hosting with Pair with phpMyAdmin access, but if solving this requires a lot of MySQL fiddling please be explicit!

Thanks, Mig

I'm sure Rick will simply have you fill out a support ticket with server login (MySQL/FTP) information so he can try to narrow down a problem...

$50 for a half hour for something to do what it was supposed to do in the first place? I'm technically proficient and have worked my way through some pretty gnarly installs and upgrades in my time with patience and the eternally impressive goodwill and knowledge of the online community. But if, as seems to be the case here according to many posts on these same boards, the latest version of Threads simply doesn't work with the provided upgrade script, why did I just spend a hundred dollars on it?

Yes, I know it's not a perfect science and that such transitions depend on a myriad of factors. (I also run Movable Type, so you can tell how much of a masochist I am.) But if the best I can get is a full stop with no idea where to even start debugging, I'm not going to be eager to shell out hundreds of dollars for support. The supposed convenience of an upgrade was the main reason for sticking with UBB, which has worked fine for me for many years. Sorry to be cranky, but with so many other options out there it's frustrating to feel like one's loyalty is misguided.

So, any suggestions about where to start looking to solve this? It's not like a time out or a MySQL problem I've seen before. (Of course there are millions of errors I haven't seen before...) Perhaps officialdom could provide me with a link to download the older 7.x version you were talking about that actually works with the import script?

Have you actually already put in a ticket? Did Rick tell you that advanced support and payment is required or did you assume that?

Trying to diagnose importer issues over the forums is a bit of a pain. We rarely end up needing advanced support, and I don't think we've ever charged for diagnosing/helping with an importer issue.

The reason it's hard to diagnose over the forums is out of all the upgrades I've done, I've never run into an issue, but I've helped a few people with problems and each time it turns out to be something different.

A basic support ticket is all we need at this point, no money involved at all.

I have run into this issue 3 times where it stalls and does not do anything, each time I either hit the back button on the browser or just refreshed the page and it continued on its merry way without incident and everything was fine.

I think there is a browser issue involved here most of the time between the server and your computer. I have came to this reason for the fact that I'm litterly sitting right on top of the server while doing the upgrades and there is not internet or network issues. The server rack is like 8 feet from my desk.

This time it ended up being an issue when the importer tried to encrypt the classic passwords to make them .threads compatible. Not sure if it was a php version issue or what. Switched it up to a straight md5() and it looks like it fixed it.

Made that change in the importer for 7.4 as well.

Thanks for fixing it, and so speedily. Much appreciated.

The redirect scripts didn't work at first but I found your note in the help forums about changing the type of redirect to 0 instead of 302 and that seems to have worked. Might be worth noting that in the upgrade script readme since it's not obvious that getting it wrong could be fatal.

Thanks again, keep up the good work.

Now if I can figure out how to get content islands and shoutbox into Movable Type...
