Can you upgrade from 7.0.2 to 7.4.X without issues or would it just be wiser to set up a temporary install, redo all of my customizing and then import my database? Of course I am waiting for 7.4 final...

You can upgrade straight to it. Always wise to make a db backup before any upgrades that do database alterations just in case, but you shouldn't have any issues. I just did a test upgrade from 7.0 to 7.4b2 this evening wink

Since I am in the process of moving my web site to a new host and server it is finally time to update my version of Threads. I guess I will just use a fresh install of 7.4.2 and change a template or two and bring over my custom images. I assume my styles and custom wrappers should still work? any advice before I let it rip?

I would suggest not to install a new version on the new site them move your data/files over. Upgrade your old site first or move then upgrade.
You are looking for trouble unless someone can give their blessing that the mysql tables are the exactly the same. Let alone style changes, languaages changes etc.

Yep.
When you upgrade if there are table changes they are performed on the existing tables. So if you install a new version then copy over your old data you may have issues.
Also the styles are saved in part in the tables. So again if you install then modify styles then move?? More problems.
Besides it is not the recommended path. So when you open a support ticket due to problems. It will just take that much longer to resolve.

Okay, it all makes sense but that now leads me to a new question: what is the best way to MOVE my forum to a new server AFTER I upgrade? Could I simply FTP the entire directory to my PC then upload it to the new server, check file permissions, set up a new database and import the data?

If you wish to upgrade first then move, yes to all.
Backup files/mysql. Upgrade. Test site.
Backup files/mysql.
At the new site: add the database. Import the database. FTP the files. Set permissions. Edit the config.inc.php file for paths, logins and passwords. Done.
I just did it yesterday.

Or you could just move the site and upgrade to 7.4.2 afterwords.
Still i would suggest pre and post backups

It's not really that bad. In fact when I moved to lunar this weekend I also had the added task of renaming my tables because I moved from a windows to linux server.
Just remember to use the:
upgrade docs

Your guides are great and I have read them and will use them both the transfer and upgrade instructions. Too bad some of those "How Do I's" are not part of the documentation in the Members area but at least they are here in the support forums. Good work my man!

Alrightie! I FINALLY upgraded and am now running 7.4.2. The upgrade went perfectly and I decided to do the upgrade before moving to my new host and server as recommended. The idea that the database would be changed was a very important bit of advice as I watched my database go through updates for every version until reaching the current veer. Looks like I inly have one or two things to adjust. One thing that is not right is the left column is not showing with the forum display - it shows only with the portal now. I looked for settings... I don't know! I need that left column to show!

BTW,
The powered by ubb at the footer is not visible due to color scheme. Some people may bust your chops about it since it is required.

Yeah, that is one of the little tweaks I need to make and I am in the middle of playing with my styles as it seems there are some new fields and options that I have not configured yet. I'm working on it! I need to get up and walk away from the computer for a while before my eyes pop.

I have the columns properly configured and I have the ability for members to disable them turned off. So far this is the only thing that isn't right.

I know the feeling.
But did you get the left islands working.
It may be a cache issue with your browser or the ubb.
You may want to clear both.

Ah! I figured it out. It is worded a little funny on the portal settings and I never thought about it until now, maybe it's me. "Only show left column on portal page?" For some reason my brain wanted to see something like "Enable Left Column" or "Show left column." Remember, I am an automotive technician - Sometimes I can be guilty of flat rate reading. blush
