Does anybody have any advice on which one is better for which situation? I have a very large board (almost 500k posts) running on a mid-powered VPS server.

At that range, it's probably going to be better to use the fulltext indexing as long as you have a decent amount of memory and your mysql install is properly tuned.

You can probably get away with using the internal but you'd need to limit the maximum range to search quite a bit since it has to do a LIKE on every post during the timeframe being searched.

it all depends on how you want search to perform.
