Please excuse my lack of technical knowledge (I know just enough to be dangerous).

The biggest challenge for our web site is the Search function.
We are a major information center for all things piano.

Consequently our members/visitors often use the search feature, and want to be able to search going back years.

Considering we have over 1.2 million posts spanning years, search gets to be a major drag on the resources.

I've recently limited the search to two years max, but doing so really reduces the ability to find useful data.

I'm hoping the great minds who work on developing threads will have figured out a solution to the search issues for version 8.

We do have a couple ideas for this that we're looking at. Nothing in stone yet, but definitely something we'll address.

In this case, I'd imagine Google has done a full crawl of at least a portion of your old posts; possibly use a Google search for your site for "old" posts, and limit the built in search to say a year?

A possibility Gizmo, although Google doesn't seem to have nearly the depth of our site that I'd like to see.

My other concern is Google sprinkles the results with their AdSense ads. I'm not anxious to give our visitors too many avenues out of the site.

I use Omniture/VisualSciences for the rest of Piano World (the other 1000+ non-forum pages), but to ramp their service up to handle the forums would be big $$

there is a sitemap script out there to help google index your site, I think Gizmo can point you in the right direction, as well as a addon to help integrate google into your site.

Well, it helps more than just google; it'll help any service which is capable of allowing indexing through RSS or XML sitemap feeds; Eddie has the right URL (or you can follow the one in my signature) for more information.

I apologize if this suggestion has been brought up, but would it be possible to be able to search by post number?

Shouldn't be hard since its already stored in a table dont know the right way to implement it, but something like this query

SELECT * FROM `ubbt_POSTS` WHERE `POST_ID` =
