ok, I want to pick up a good guide/reference book (or two) to help me better understand all this so I can edit files with a bit more confidence and maybe create some of my own
php I understand enough to make minor edits, but would like to be able to create small scripts, and even re-write some of these 10 year old cgi scripts I like so much. (guardian script from xav.com)
css I have just started playing around with, and I wish I had sooner. I was always of the theory, it works, leave it alone, but with css things work better, simpler.. lol
I like something that covers the theory, but also has a structured guide, listing commands, syntaxes, examples, etc.
suggestions?

I think I'll sit right here and watch for the answers. Several years ago, I bought "HTML4 for Dummies." It helped me then, and I still look at it once in a while. There are a bunch of different "Dummies" books for php and css, but I have no idea if they are any good or not. The HTML4 book meets your "I like..." line, so I would think the other books would, too. I have never seen them, so I can't endorse them. www.dummies.com

in the past, I have found them to be great guides, and will probably end up getting one for this as well, but I wanted to get feedback from those that are more experiences with PHP on that they find useful.

for css, i'd recommend
Eric Meyer on CSS More Eric Meyer on CSS
books..
also a website to see the wonder of CSS would be csszengarden.com
also, if you aren't running Firefox with Firebug and Colorzilla, you are missing out on an entirely new/rich experience
php books are a dime a dozen.. i can't specify just one... but you should definitely have php.net bookmarked..

Eric Meyer is the CSS guru, many places link to his material instead of trying to write their own stuff.
SD, pointed me to the Firebug with Firefox, and it is great tool.

Used to be you only had to copy/paste "get the camel book" and that's all there was to it. I wish there was such a simple and widely accepted answer nowadays.
