Our server crashed twice. We're not sure why.

The webmaster believes that there could be something on the boards section of the site that is causing the server to crash.

We were recently hacked. As i discovered a 'new member' who was able to give himself 'Administrator' status. (Which scares me.) But I demoted and banned him several days before the server crash #2. Could he have caused crash #2? He didn't post anything. He only sent out one spammy PM.

My associate wonders if maybe there is something posted on our forum that causes the crash when someone opens a particular message. Or if some malicious person has found some code to enter as a message and bring the site down. (My associate is merely trying to speculate, as i am)

It's doubtful that a message posted could cause a server to crash. But if they were able to promote themselves to admin status, then they may have access to the server itself. If this is your own server then really what you need to do is look through the various logs about the time of the server crash, dmesg, syslog, etc. to see if you can find anything out of the ordinary.
