I'm currently getting more visitors to the site than usual and at peak times the following error message gets logged >100 times in the admin panel under SQL errors:

Script: - Line: Unable to connect to the database! - Too many connections

Is it the my.cnf file that needs changing? Which settings should I alter, "max_connections" or "max_user_connections" or both?

It's times like these when you really wish you had your bulletin board hosted on a server managed by Mindraven.

I am happy since I switched to Mindraven a few months ago.

I believe it's the best way forward, might as well let the best people out there develop the software and manage your server.

Thanks for the link you provided, I have also searched for some more results and found some interesting tips on increasing the connections.

Is there a special program I can use on a mac to download the my.cnf file and then upload it again, or possible just edit the one on the server directly?

Not sure about a mac, But I just use Filezilla for ftp connections.
They have a mac flavor but I have never used it.

you could SSH into the box and go to /etc/my.cnf and edit there.

of FTP ( sftp ) in with root psw and edit it that way
