Is there a way to change the 'member titles' to custom wording that is not determined by the number of posts"

If you want to do it on a one by one basis. Control Panel » Member Management Select the member in question Edit-Member Custom Title: You can even use some html in that field.

Thanks, that did just what I was after. I used the custom title as a link to a website and the only problem is the entire area, including 'stars' and avatars are surrounded by blue.
Now, I prefer that everyone is 'visible' in the 'who's online' but I have someone who keeps unchecking the box. Is there a setting to remove the choice (7.2.2).

This display option doesn't seem to be available in 7.2.2.
Any ideas on how to not display the blue ( like a used link) around the custom member title?
Thanks,
Tim

Tim Steve gave you the path to the option for your version. But to the link issue. What did you actually put in the title field?

I haven't been able to log in for the last few days, but now it is working.
The member I have been having an issue with wanting to be invisible is a moderator, so he has access to the control panel.
Probably the only way to fix that is de-moderator him.
My issue with the title was my html, (senior moment).
Thanks to all for the help.

You can limit the rights/access of your moderators. It just depends on what you want to allow a moderator to be able to do. For instance Group Management » CP Permissions for moderators set to 0 Can edit users Has full access to the control panel. They can still moderate the forum they are assigned to. They just won't have access to the control panel.
