Spammers, yuk. It is that I just discovered:

http://www.stopforumspam.com/

Anybody know about them? Looks like a legitimate site and they advertise that a forum can link to them and vet registrations, thus rejecting spammers prior to allowing them on a forum.

Seems like a good idea to me.

Several people here use it as a resource. Including myself.
Never tried the integration part. So i don't know how feasible it is to hack it in.
The last time I looked into it there were some plugins for specific forums but not ubb.
I just look up suspicious ones and manually ban them for a certain period of time.
I am a little leery of a permanent ban per ip since they constantly change so a ip might be a bad person for a while then it is not after a few months.

I've used them for some time now, quite handy for 'suspicious' registrations.

However, I don't ban - I use the approve registration method.

As far as I recall, nobody I've disallowed has ever made a second registration attempt (...with the same email address at least).

Actually for me I ban them from the entire site with htaccess using the ip number.
I look at the error log (not ubb). If I see some phishing for urls. I look them up at stopforumspam.
If they have some entries.
Then I add them to htaccess.
Then after a month or so I enable them again.

But that is just the way I do it.

Sooooo, ahem, hack, cough, it might be a good idea for UBB to be able to plug into stopspam?

Just saying wink

You bet.
Version 8 is supposed to start with some basic api(plugin) capability. But Rick has not posted any specific info on the subject. Only that they are working on it for version 8.
And when released we would have the needed information.
But that was way back when he started on the project.

Since Rick has kept a low profile the last few weeks, I can only assume he is hard at work trying to finish up v8 for a release.

Since he kinda sorta promised it would be out by now.

I know he has had some setbacks with one person out sick for quite sometime.

I am not able to do this as many of my users (maybe 40%) come from within government intranets with the same IP address.

A year or two ago I inadvertently banned an intranet address and lost a few hundred users!

I use their email and ip address list as well, and update my growing lists quarterly. I also have some forms on my site for a club application that get touched sometimes, when I get bogus forms come in, I go see what ip touched the script and , if they are not in the us I ban the isp's ip range in htaccess, (heck, it's a local jeep club very few people in China would be interested)If it's a us ip address, I ban that ip address, if I get more from that isp's ip range, I will send a love letter to their hosting admins and start complaining, that usually makes it stop. I have inadvertently annoyed a few people, but I also seem to have reduced the amount of spam substantially.
