Is there a way to deactivate a Membership? I'd like to make a Name inactive, so they can't login anymore, but not blocked from viewing threads.
Does 'Banning' block them somehow, so they can't get in to see anything anymore? Or does it just keep them from logging in?

You could create a new group - e.g. Blocked. Set your forum permissions Can See Forum, Can View Topics, etc. to 0 and then move that member to that group. If you enter a -1 for any specific permission, then a user will not have that permission even if they belong to other groups that do have it set.

Thanks for the reply,
I tried something similar, copying settings from the 'Guest' group, however they still remain a 'User' and able to edit profile settings, receive PMs, etc.
I Banned them, which they're ok with BTW, but complaint is they can't see forum threads anymore. How they are blocked?

Banning would do the same thing as -1.
Also, they'd log out and be a "guest", so the guest permission would be at work there.

What method did you ban them by. I ask because I just went to your board and a guest can view forums and posts.
Unless you have some forums restricted from guests viewing.

Unless you have some forums restricted from guests viewing. Ruben, I didn't put them on the Ban List if that's what you're getting at. I did it in Member>>permissions area. I can't verify that he can't see the Forum, that's just what he said, so who knows... The situation is this... we're supposed to have a professional level Forum, but once in awhile we get a young enthusiast in there that's not qualified to participate, and still somewhat of a wiseguy. I don't want to discouarge them from reading and learning, but they're not yet ready to actively participate. I'd like to put their 'membership' on hold for a period of time and re-instate at some future date. Bill

Then I guess in this case it might be best to try the become member function. So you can test what they can or can't do. I never tried the ban member in member management. I would assume it works the same as the ban list tab. but maybe not. It could be you have some forums not viewable by guests that he can't open anymore.

The 'become member' function doesn't work for a banned member. I tried that already. Bill

Could there be a cookie related reason a banned person couldn't see the Forum if a Guest can? I just un-banned him, became member and expired cookies under his 'My Stuff' if that will do anything... I'll check back with him to see what he says. Bill
