Database connection errors and erratic cache dump of who´s online.

Several days ago our server had a hard drive failure and was rebuilt using backups. Since its come back online I am having problems with database connections and cache dumps. I have been working with my host (tech services) to resolve this but no luck. Tech services thinks files of UBB have been corrupted and suggest I perform an audit on all files to find the problem.

Where do I begin with that? confused

Problems:
Who´s Online - Sometimes it refreshes correctly for up to ten minutes but generally under two minutes it dumps everyone that had been online. No users on line.
Database connection error – Can not connect to data base at this time click back button. This is a UBB error not a server error message.

Any way ideas or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

well, an audit would be easy to do

just download your forum to HDD and run a compare program on that dir vs a stock install dir

Beyond Compare does folders quite easily

If you are on a mac xcode filemerge is great.

Does the database connect periodically or not at all?

Beyond compare is a very nice tool to have and use.
But it is not free anymore.

But if you have the virgin stock code for your version. Why not just re-upload the files. Following the upgrade procedure.
Just don't run the upgrade script.

I did go obtain Beyond compare and checked all server files against the originals. I did not find any corrupt files. I did find many directories and files with improper permissions during the audit process. These permissions were addressed and when I run the permissions check (from CP) everything is indicated as OK.

I´m still chasing down this issue and think that maybe the directories for Admin, importers, libs, scripts and ubb_js do not have correct file permissions set. These do not seem to be looked at with the CP permissions check. Should all of these directories be 775 and files within 664? I have reviewed the install directions and read nothing in reference to permissions in these directories.

I still receive database connection errors several times a day and my server tech support insist the issues are software related and not connected with their service. The situation has improved slightly and at least the forums do function so my stress is low. smile

Thanks for the advice

Well the install documentation will guide you through the proper file /folder permissions for all of them even if the control panel does not check them all.
But if you have database issues none of the above will fix the problem.
My suggestion would be to enable the server logs in the ubb control panel.
Then you will see what is going on. Or at least should be able to.
If it just reports a database connection error then one of a couple of issues. The user access for the database does not have global access, or the host has issues.

So, because the software cannot connect to their database server they're demanding it's the software? Sorry, doesn't work that way... The server uses standard methods to connect to the database, if the connection isn't available all it simply does is tell you the error...

I tried to be politically correct about the issue but Gizmo , Hit the nail on the head.
Connection issues are connection issues.
