Hi guys, I hope you can help!

http://www.ultravox.org.uk/forum

The forum WAS set up all nicely, working perfectly. Then I needed to make a tiny tweak to the Style Settings last night, which normally would be all fine and dandy. Except it wasn't.

I got the following error:

Can't write to the /var/www/vhosts/vps38702156.123-vps.co.uk/httpdocs/forum/styles directory!

But actually it was evidently lying, because the front end style went all to cock. I replaced the styles/3.php file and that at least improved things, I'm now back to SirDude's unmodified 'RWB' style. But all my CSS modifications to that are not showing at the front end.

They ARE however still showing in the Admin area! All the CSS edits are still there - but if I click to 'Update or add style' to apply them, I get the 'can't write' error.

I checked the forum and styles directories, both were writeable to 775. I've even upped both temporarily to 777, but to no avail.

Any ideas? The colour scheme is clashing quite badly and we're getting tons of visits due to band's new album, so I need to fix quickly if possible! onoes

Thank you!

If you can get to the ubb control panel then I would double check the permissions from there.
Control Panel » Permission Checks
You also can double click on each folder to view if a file has the wrong permission.

Thanks Ruben. Crikey, it was all 'OK' before, now everything except three things are 'FAIL'. How the heck does that happen? frown

How do I find out what they are all supposed to be? Besides 'try & check again' for every file?

Ta!

If you have a fail it could be a file and not the folder.
If you click on it it will expand and show the files And what file failed.

Probably best method would be check the permissions on what failed against what is okay in the same folder.

There have been issues with some software we use to change file folder permissions. Where they really don't change permissions.
I have had that issue with windows servers. Since you really don't have the chmod setting to deal with.
For me I have never had a issue with filezilla.

If you are stuck. List in detail the three items that failed. And what they are set for.

FYI,
From the installation docs it states.

styles/ directory: set permissions to 0777

files within the styles/ directory: set permissions to 0666

Thanks Ruben! I've managed to get my styles working again, I just now need to change permissions on everything else that failed.

And it was pretty much everything else that failed - all sections except three. That's a LOT of files I have to CHMOD.

I haven't touched the files in a month or two, BUT the site was moved from shared hosting to a VPS. I'm thinking this must be when the permissions got screwed up.

I'll get changing and checking...

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
Cerise.
