Well, I'd love to help but I don't fully understand your problem and that link totally doesn't have an actual installed forum on it.
Few things for thought, things get updated for compatibility because old code is removed/phased out from php when updated; hence why there ends up having to have to update for newer versions.
Also, 7.5.3 is insecure, you should be running the patch; people where hacked on a regular basis without the patch and it was filthy to clean up.
General thought, I'd upgrade regardless.

I mentioned that I was running 7.5.3p2, and not just 7.5.3. Fully aware of the security issue that was raised and I was patched accordingly.
The URLs provided were fictious, only to illustrate that regardless of which "page" you were viewing in a particular forum, you'd always be stuck on the first.
Having said that, I ended up installing 7.5.6 on a test server and it did appear to fix the problem of the topic list not paginating.
I agree with you that updating with each release is good practice, but I tend to hold back when the release notes don't have anything I'm too concerned with, or critical -- mainly so I don't have to re-do all my mods (I'm lazy).

Here is your answer from the changelog. For version 7.5.5 Made adjustments to a variety of scripts to be compatible with PHP 5.3+.

Thanks Ruben, I had read that in the changelog and even mentioned it in my original post.
As it's a generic description I wasn't able to determine if my specific problem was PHP 5.3 related, or something else, hence the reason for my post.
In any case, it appears as though it was PHP 5.3 related.
